One advantage of holding the position of chancellor at Washington University is the frequent reminders of the accomplishments of our faculty, alumni, and staff. The individuals I encounter and the narratives I hear exemplify the fusion of intellect and enthusiasm. Frequently, our graduates are fervent about leveraging their WashU education and training to benefit the broader world.
“Transformation is more impactful and enduring when we harness our collective resources and pursue a unified objective or set of priorities.”
Andrew D. Martin
However, nobody who aims to instigate change can operate in isolation. Transformation is more impactful and enduring when we harness our collective resources and pursue a unified objective or set of priorities. This concept is the foundation of With You: The WashU Campaign. Through this initiative, WashU aims to secure the necessary resources to continue fulfilling our shared goals and creating meaningful, enduring transformation through essential research, patient care, and educational access.
A campaign is, by its nature, a coordinated strategy to fulfill a goal, and this specific campaign has been years in the planning. Over this time, WashU has engaged in significant self-examination to evaluate our strengths and assets, and to pinpoint the areas in which we believe we can generate the most substantial impact. With You seeks to bridge the gap between WashU’s aspirations and our influence, enabling us to honor our promises towards expanding educational access, preparing future-ready leaders, and enhancing healthier lives and communities through research and patient care. Success will also empower WashU to determine our own path and uphold our enduring commitments to academic inquiry and excellence.
This edition of WashU Magazine showcases several stories of faculty, alumni, and staff who are addressing significant challenges and discovering solutions — including the university’s initiatives to enhance public health through research on tuberculosis and the efforts of several alumni to safeguard and manage their community’s water sources, even as considerable changes in climate trends affect their endeavors. These experts have discerned the transformation they wish to witness in the world, and they show up daily to facilitate that change.
“I invite you to engage in the thought exercise that the campaign proposes: to reflect on the one change that you believe would create a remarkable difference in how we live, how we work, how we learn, and how we thrive as a society.”
Andrew D. Martin
I urge you to examine the brochure included with this edition of the magazine, enabling you to gain a deeper insight into what WashU aspires to accomplish with the With You campaign. Additionally, I encourage you to engage in the thought exercise that the campaign presents: to contemplate the one change you believe would generate a remarkable difference in how we live, how we work, how we learn, and how we thrive as a society. If you would like to express the change you wish to see or read about the aspirations and interests of others, please connect with us through our campaign website at withyou.washu.edu.
I am convinced that WashU bears a responsibility as a leading global university to confront complex issues and to maintain our legacy of deliberate transformation — the kind of transformation that requires years to strategize, years to implement, and years to realize. I am eager to embark on that journey with you.
