Moe Obeidat understands data. His initial course was through the performance-based admissions (PBA) pathway. “PBA was incredibly engaging. Based on my experience in the program thus far, it’s one of the most demanding courses. But I appreciate its rigor. It consolidates all the theoretical knowledge into one class. It’s tough, but it prepares you for future success.”

Courses that catalyzed advancement at work

While contemplating the program, certain courses particularly resonated with Moe, both for their academic rigor and their direct influence on his professional responsibilities.

• The Art of Data Visualization: “In my regular work, I’ve produced a considerable amount of reporting, so that course was immensely beneficial. I acquired new techniques and strategies that I apply on the job and in upcoming projects.”
• LLM (Large Language Models) and Their Applications: “Essentially, it’s about learning AI. It covers how AI tools are built and function. I had been eagerly anticipating this course since my enrollment, and I just began it recently. It’s thrilling because it directly ties to the type of machine learning work I aspire to pursue in my career.”

For Moe, the MDS represents more than merely a degree. It serves as a stepping stone toward his forthcoming career shifts. “I’m aspiring to transition into positions that are more suited to becoming a full data scientist or machine learning engineer. That’s a significant part of why I selected this program.”

Flexibility suited for a hectic lifestyle

Moe’s juggling act isn’t an easy task: he is fully employed while simultaneously pursuing the MDS program full-time. He attributes his success to the online format and the supportive framework provided.

“It’s a significant effort to find equilibrium! I generally reserve weekends for my coursework. The Coursera platform has also been invaluable in organizing due dates and tasks.”

Live office hours and accessibility to professors also made a lasting impression: “Professors and TAs run office hours, allowing direct meetings and emails. That flexibility is tremendously beneficial and appreciated, especially knowing they also teach in-person classes.”

Moreover, the application process itself was refreshingly uncomplicated. “Nearly every institution I considered required GREs, high GPAs, and a more rigorous application process. With Pitt, I completed the PBA course, attained the necessary grade, validated my degree, and I was accepted. It was a seamless experience.”

Looking forward: “The future is data”

Moe has already perceived the advantages of his studies in his current position, and he’s certain it will pave the way for the next stage of his career. He also views the MDS as a program that is approachable for learners from various backgrounds, not solely those already established in data.

As Moe articulated:

“You can thrive in the program even without a tech background or experience in data. I urge everyone to consider that. The future is rooted in data, AI, and machine learning. This field will endure; it’s not going away anytime soon. If you engage now, gain this experience and education, and apply it to your current or future roles, it will be immensely advantageous.
