Students taking an exam cannot print, copy or access other applications or websites during testing time; additionally, webcam technology keeps an eye out for any cheaters during this period.

Before an exam begins, students will go through a series of screens designed to ensure their webcam and microphone are operating as expected. The first of these is known as Webcam Check.

Camera Settings

At Webcam For Lockdown Browser’s Camera Settings page, instructors can use a tool called Webcam For Lockdown Browser to select which events happen prior to a Monitor webcam session commencing. Below is the standard startup sequence, but instructors may select individual events to tailor student experience as desired – events like student agreement to Terms of Use, webcam check and reminder are among these available events; students also have an option of choosing video resolution and pixel count preferences for their session.

Instructors can set a maximum recording time limit and limit how many times students may reload the recording, as well as setting privacy settings and permitting or disallowing external USB devices from being used with the webcam. Once an instructor activates Lockdown Browser, students are prevented from printing or copying materials during tests as well as accessing applications or going to any unauthorized URLs during them. The “i” icon in the browser toolbar provides a status indicator for whether or not a webcam is connected and operating properly. If it displays as green, that means your camera is functioning normally while red indicates issues streaming video content.

When the yellow icon appears, several camera issues could arise. For instance, your webcam might be experiencing difficulties capturing video or audio; your camera might not be able to record images; there may even be issues with device drivers; in some instances anti-virus software can interfere with camera drivers and cause them to not function correctly, temporarily disabling it can help determine whether this is indeed a factor and find solutions.

On occasion, students may experience camera issues when taking exams or exams. Respondus Lockdown Browser, either with or without webcam support, will often be required for proctoring during quizzes in Canvas. Your instructor should indicate this need in the Modules section of their course; with Respondus Monitor enabled, any attempt at taking an exam using another web browser or program (like Word) during exam session would not be permitted.

Respondus Monitor requires downloading and installing on your computer; you can do this from Canvas’ Course Navigation menu by choosing “Respondus Lockdown Browser,” and will display a list of quizzes that require Respondus Monitor – these quizzes with required icons can only accept answers submitted through Respondus; any other means won’t accept submission of answers.

Once you have downloaded and installed the software, once in your course it can be tested through practice quizzes specifically tailored for testing its capabilities. This is the best way to ensure you will know how to utilize its tools before they are asked of you during an exam.
