In accordance with a recent federal regulation, Washington University in St. Louis has revised its policies and initiated a new website to offer details on state law and university regulations regarding hazing, as well as reporting and preventative measures.

President Joe Biden enacted the Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) in December. The SCHA aims to enhance hazing reporting and prevention across college campuses by:

  • Incorporating hazing data into annual overall campus safety reports
  • Creating a university-wide research-informed hazing education and prevention initiative
  • Enforcing hazing regulations and producing a hazing transparency report, which discloses incidents where a recognized student organization was found in breach of the hazing policy.

The university’s interpretation of hazing, its regulations, the process for reporting hazing incidents, and its preventive and awareness initiatives can all be found on the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards website.

WashU commenced the implementation of the new requirements in January. The first hazing transparency report will be released in December; its inaugural annual safety report, inclusive of hazing statistics, is scheduled for publication by October 2026.
