The Danforth Campus at Washington University in St. Louis experienced significant damage during the catastrophic tornado that struck parts of St. Louis on May 16, resulting in damaged roofs and concrete. Furthermore, the storm uprooted numerous large trees, obstructing roads and causing extensive power and technology failures. However, according to Chancellor Andrew D. Martin, this is minor compared to the broader devastation across the region.
“Above all, our thoughts and support are directed toward those in the area affected by this storm, particularly those facing the unfortunate loss of life or serious injuries,” Martin stated. “At WashU, we inhabit St. Louis and serve St. Louis, and our compassion is with everyone in pain.”
In the hours and days that followed the tragic tornado, the WashU community swiftly organized to assist its neighbors.
“In the aftermath of this storm, numerous individuals within our WashU community have expressed their desire to help,” remarked Lisa Weingarth, senior advisor to the chancellor and executive director of the “In St. Louis, For St. Louis” initiative.
“In the last few days, we’ve received communication from numerous community members who have provided resources and information to support our community. I am immensely proud and heartened by this unity as we come together to recover and rebuild. It exemplifies the strength and resilience of our region.”
Weingarth’s team collaborates with community partners to stay abreast of the rapidly changing community requirements. They are consistently updating their website with ways for the WashU community to contribute. For groups of three or more interested in volunteering together, the United Way Volunteer Center has designated specific opportunities for group sign-ups.
The university will keep listening to community needs and responding as it’s able in the upcoming weeks and months, Weingarth added.
