University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce released this proclamation after the demise of Rep. Frank Chopp, the former speaker of the Washington House and a UW graduate from 1975:

Rep. Frank Chopp committed his existence to public duty and to enhancing the lives of all residents of Washington. Numerous students have had the opportunity to attain a degree due to his guidance in broadening access to higher education, particularly in high-demand sectors essential for our state’s economic well-being. The Workforce Education Investment Act and the enlargement of the Washington College Grant stand as significant accomplishments for our state’s learners.

Rep. Chopp was also devoted to advancing our state’s health care framework, encompassing mental health provisions. His support for UW Medicine has allowed us to assist many more patients, particularly through the Center for Behavioral Health and Learning.

Rep. Chopp has left our state in a healthier, more thriving condition, which will serve as his lasting legacy. I was honored to collaborate with him during these past years, and our University takes pride in considering him a distinguished alumnus. The UW community collectively grieves with his family and acquaintances over the passing of one of our state’s leading public figures.
