The graduate and professional degree programs at UW received widespread acknowledgment as among the finest in the country, per U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Graduate Schools rankings.University of Washington

The graduate and professional degree offerings at the University of Washington were extensively acknowledged as among the premier in the country, as stated in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Graduate Schools published late Monday.

The UW Information School shared the No. 1 position with the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign for Library and Information Studies. Furthermore, over 80 UW schools and departments achieved notable placements in the 2026 rankings.

While the UW commemorates the achievements and influence of the programs highlighted by U.S. News — recognizing that numerous applicants utilize these rankings to guide their school selections and explore potential study areas — the University is also aware of the limitations present in the ranking systems.

The UW School of Law and the UW School of Medicine opted out of the U.S. News rankings in 2022 and 2023, respectively, citing apprehensions that certain methodologies in the rankings for these disciplines encourage practices and policies that contradict the schools’ public service objectives.

UW leadership persists in collaborating with U.S. News and other ranking organizations to enhance their methodologies, provided the organizations are receptive. Schools, colleges, and departments consistently reassess the advantages and drawbacks of engaging in specific rankings.

“These rankings illustrate that the UW’s exceptional graduate and professional degree programs are at the forefront of preparing highly skilled individuals to address critical workforce demands and foster advancement and innovation across various fields,” stated UW President Ana Mari Cauce. “Recognizing how significantly graduate and professional education benefits our nation and individuals everywhere is more essential than ever, and the UW takes pride in having these remarkable programs acknowledged.”

Excluding the School of Law and the School of Medicine, 32 UW programs secured spots in the top 10, while over 80 are ranked within the top 35.

In the latest rankings released this year, UW achieved a top 10 position nationwide in library and information studies, public affairs, nursing, speech and language pathology, education, public health, computer science, psychology, and civil engineering, according to U.S. News.

The Evans School of Public Policy & Governance at UW has sustained its top-10 ranking for over a decade, standing seventh nationally. The environmental policy program at the Evans School was rated second, while both nonprofit management and social policy programs were recognized at No. 8.

This year’s rankings underscored UW’s prominence in nursing and public health: The UW School of Nursing attained the No. 1 overall ranking for public schools offering a doctor of nursing practice program, and the nursing programs at UW Bothell and UW Tacoma rank among the top 10 public institutions offering a master’s degree. The School of Public Health has kept a top-10 ranking for more than ten years, arriving this year tied for No. 10. Additionally, the school produced three programs within the top 10: biostatistics, environmental health sciences, and epidemiology. Overall, the U.S. News rankings highlighted UW’s strength in health sciences: The School of Social Work received a No. 7 ranking, and the School of Pharmacy tied for 12th — or third among public institutions on the West Coast — on last year’s list, while dentistry programs were not ranked.

The programs at UW in speech and language pathology rated No. 5, surpassing schools on the West Coast. Three programs from the College of Education received top 10 placements. The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering this year tied for seventh overall, with four programs ranking in the top 10, including artificial intelligence, programming languages, systems, and theory.

In particular cases, such as the College of Arts & Sciences and the Foster School of Business, U.S. News evaluates several professional disciplines within academic units. The rankings listed below are based on preliminary data and may undergo updates. U.S. News & World Report’s methodology combines expert input and statistical metrics.
