Washington University in St. Louis has been evaluating its initiatives and operations in favor of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As the forthcoming phase in this process, Chancellor Andrew D. Martin will establish a committee to propose suggestions to university leadership on how WashU can most successfully and efficiently reach its community-oriented objectives and assist its students, faculty, and staff, while continuing to adhere to federal guidelines and legislation.

“At WashU, our greatest asset is our individuals,” Martin stated. “Our community consists of people from various backgrounds. Each of us contributes our distinctive history and viewpoints to our work, studies, and relationships. We embody numerous cultures, backgrounds, experiences, and thought processes, including a diverse array of political perspectives. This diversity is what strengthens us. This is what defines us as WashU.”

“We’ve all noticed the term ‘DEI’ in recent news. It has garnered diverse interpretations among individuals. For us, it transcends any three letters or any singular individual’s or group’s definition of what those letters imply. For us here at WashU, the initiative revolves around aiding our students, faculty, and staff. The efforts of this committee will enhance our ability to nurture and support the type of community we aspire to be, where everyone feels welcomed, included, and appreciated.”

This initiative arises at a time when higher education institutions are prompted to deliberate on their strategies to bolster their communities.

“American colleges and universities are currently under the national spotlight,” Provost Beverly Wendland remarked. “With public attention directed toward our institutions, this is an opportune moment for us to evaluate our efforts and ensure that we are addressing this pivotal work in a way that will maximize benefits for our community. We remain committed to ongoing enhancement and creating an inviting campus atmosphere for all at WashU. In this regard, we remain receptive to the possibility that we can implement positive changes.”

University officials anticipate that the committee’s endeavors will assist WashU in identifying its successes, recognizing areas that need improvement, and determining if any programs or initiatives should be discontinued. This is likely to encompass alterations in operations and activities, as well as alterations in how the university communicates regarding this work, which may include potential updates to websites or other resources.

“We have made significant advancements in recent years in becoming an institution recognized for striving to enable everyone to feel welcomed and engaged as part of our community,” stated David H. Perlmutter, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and the George and Carol Bauer Dean of WashU Medicine. “Nationally, we are being encouraged to scrutinize our methodologies and ensure our approaches are sustainable. This committee will play a crucial role in facilitating that process.”

“At WashU, our priority is — and has always been — our individuals,” emphasized Nichol L. Luoma, executive vice chancellor and chief administrative officer. “We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive campus atmosphere where every person feels welcomed, valued, and supported. Anna Gonzalez, vice chancellor for student affairs, remarked: “We aspire to be an environment where our differences are cherished, disagreements nurture opportunities for enhanced understanding, and we can learn from one another and grow together in the quest for truth. We are hopeful that this initiative will yield positive results and ultimately reinforce our approach to this essential work and our collective sense of community.”

“We might discover innovative methods of approaching some tasks or find that our existing strategies are effective in various areas,” Martin noted. “Our ultimate objective is to guarantee that we can continue our vital work supporting our community in a manner that aligns with our values and the law. We will remain unwavering in our commitment to cultivating a supportive and inclusive environment on our campus and assisting the individuals who make our community outstanding.”
