As postsecondary education confronts unparalleled pressures from political involvement, fiscal limitations, and shifting student demands, the University of Michigan and University of California Riverside inaugurate the new Center for Strategic and Inclusive Governance.

With a resource center aimed at bolstering governance across all tiers of the campus community, the center equips university administrators with research-based instruments to make mission-driven decisions and protect fiscal stability, averting the expensive repercussions of ineffective and politically motivated leadership that jeopardizes the entire community.

Established by governance scholars Demetri Morgan from the University of Michigan and Raquel Rall from UC Riverside, the center aims to fill a vital void: the demand for timely, actionable, and accessible resources that assist boards and their collaborators—presidents, senior administrators, board personnel, faculty leaders, and student representatives—in making impactful, mission-focused decisions.

“CSIG encapsulates the excellence that research universities can deliver—transforming academic insights into pragmatic tools that enhance governance throughout the campus community,” remarked Elizabeth Birr Moje, dean of the Marsal Family School of Education and the George Herbert Mead Collegiate Professor of Education. “This initiative couldn’t be more essential or timely.”

The initiation of the center arrives at a crucial time for higher education as boards and governance leaders wrestle with recent legislative requirements, demographic changes, and inquiries regarding institutional worth and purpose. The center plans to broaden its resources in the coming months, including quick-response toolkits developed in partnership with affiliated organizations.

The CSIG Resource Hub launches with over 30 research-driven tools categorized into three groups:

  • Strategy Resources—Immediate support for boards addressing complicated matters, such as Board Guide: Safeguarding Mission-Centered Independence
  • Education Resources—Clarifications and frameworks that enhance governance capacity, including FAQ: Executing Inclusive Governance Practices
  • Operational Resources—Useful tools for implementation and evaluation, such as the Board Guide: Governance Self-Assessment

“CSIG guarantees that boards possess the research-informed resources required for effective governance, with open access enabling each stakeholder engaged in the institution’s mission—presidents, board personnel, faculty leaders, students—to participate constructively in the governance process,” stated Morgan, CSIG co-director and U-M associate professor of education.

Notable aspects of CSIG’s strategy encompass:

  • Research-to-Practice Translation: Transforming academic insights into practical advice
  • Timely Guidance: Resources that swiftly address emerging governance issues
  • Movement Building: Establishing a community of practice around mission-centered governance
  • Cross-Sector Collaboration: Amplifying efforts from diverse organizations and researchers
  • Continuous Evolution: Regular updates to content influenced by user feedback and emerging requirements

“Effective governance does not entail choosing between strategic considerations and inclusive principles—it involves recognizing that one cannot exist without the other,” affirmed Rall, CSIG co-director and UCR associate professor of education. “When boards make decisions that benefit their entire campus community, they are making the strategic choice that fortifies their institution’s long-term sustainability and impact.”
