Twenty-nine individuals, including students, faculty, and staff members from the University of Georgia, who have passed away since April 2024 will be commemorated during the university’s yearly candlelight memorial ceremony on April 23 at 7 p.m. at the UGA Chapel.
President Jere W. Morehead will officiate the occasion. The names of all 12 students and 17 faculty and staff members will be announced publicly, followed by the tolling of the Chapel bell and the illumination of a candle.
The names will be announced by Rebecca Mayo, president of the UGA Staff Council; John Neely, president of the Student Government Association; and Eric Rubenstein, chair of the University Council Executive Committee. Members of the Arch Society will light candles as each name is called out.
All members of the university community and the general public are welcome to join.
Students whose names will be mentioned, along with their hometowns and their fields of study, include:
- Sofia Araujo, a fourth-year undergraduate from Wallington, New Jersey, specializing in psychology
- Sriya Avasarala, a second-year undergraduate from Alpharetta, aspiring to major in biological engineering
- Zach Brown, a fourth-year undergraduate from Suwanee specializing in management
- Jackson Dodgen, a third-year undergraduate from Brunswick specializing in biomedical physiology
- Gleaton Jones, a fourth-year undergraduate from Albany specializing in marketing
- Mary Joy Moosman, an incoming first-year undergraduate from West Point, aspiring to major in history
- David Mullins, an incoming first-year undergraduate from Albany, aspiring to major in political science
- Bibek Pangeni, a doctoral candidate from Bardiya, Nepal, specializing in physics
- Muhammad Sakhi, a second-year undergraduate from Lilburn, aspiring to major in risk management and insurance
- Anvi Sharma, a second-year undergraduate from Alpharetta, aspiring to major in management information systems
- Pete Thangtaveekool, a third-year undergraduate from Richmond Hill specializing in psychology
- Jaeho Yoon, a doctoral candidate from Seoul, South Korea, specializing in kinesiology
