In May, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved the creation of an autonomous School of Nursing at the University of Georgia.

At that time, the Board requested the USG system office and UGA to collaborate during the summer to formulate a detailed strategy for the school’s establishment. That strategy is now progressing.

“The UGA School of Nursing will enhance our institution’s dedication to meeting the healthcare requirements of all Georgians, offer educational prospects that our students have desired for numerous years, and cultivate a community of scholars prepared to train the upcoming generation of nurses,” stated President Jere W. Morehead. “We extend our gratitude to the Board of Regents members, the Chancellor, and the staff of the University System of Georgia for their ongoing support in addressing Georgia’s most urgent needs.”

The state of Georgia requires additional nurses to fulfill the needs of its growing population, and this area demands more nursing faculty. To tackle these issues, the Board of Regents has suggested that the UGA School of Nursing first provide a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and subsequently offer a Master of Science in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice shortly thereafter.

UGA will collaborate with leaders at Augusta University as it establishes the UGA School of Nursing in Athens.

“Our university has maintained a robust and enduring partnership with Augusta University, and we anticipate working with President Russell Keen and his team at AU throughout this endeavor,” remarked Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Ben Ayers.

UGA will assemble a launch team to begin work on this initiative immediately. This group will be tasked with implementing the necessary steps to welcome students to the UGA School of Nursing as early as fall 2027.
