EVENT: For thirty years, U-M’s Saturday Morning Physics has been delving into cosmic enigmas and addressing real-world inquiries with the community through engaging experiments and on-stage lectures. The 30th season of SMP will uphold that legacy beginning Oct. 4, with Timothy Chupp, U-M professor of physics and biomedical engineering, presenting a complimentary public talk on the science behind baseball.

This year’s SMP agenda also features discussions about the language of science, the universe’s age, and the enigmas of quantum science, alongside an entire morning of entertaining, family-oriented physics demonstrations on Dec. 6.

The speaker lineup includes:

  • Timothy Chupp (U-M), “Science of Baseball,” Oct. 4
  • Anne Curzan (U-M), “When ‘Physic(k)s’ Lost Its ‘k’ and Other Language Quarks,” Oct. 18

  • Gabriele Carcassi (U-M), “What Is Classical and What Is Quantum?” Nov. 15
  • 30 Years of SMP! (U-M), Family-friendly physics demonstrations, Dec. 6

SMP is funded by the Dr. Mary Lois Tiffany Endowment, Hideko Tomozawa Endowment, Van Loo Family Endowment, Pulikeshi Dayalu Astrophysics Fund, and Friends of the Program.
