U-M Secures Lease for UMCI Residential Facility

The University of Michigan Center for Innovation in Detroit intends to lease a residential high-rise located at 2205 Cass Ave., being constructed by Related Companies and Olympia Development of Michigan.

The U-M Board of Regents sanctioned the lease during a special gathering on July 17. The initial development budget for this undertaking is estimated at $186 million.

UMCI is envisioned as a premier research, education, and entrepreneurship hub aimed at propelling innovation and nurturing talent-centered community progress. Groundbreaking for the 200,000-gross-square-foot, six-story UMCI structure commenced in December 2023, with completion anticipated in 2027. A live webcam is broadcasting the construction updates.

“UMCI represents a daring initiative that will stimulate innovation and promote opportunities in Detroit,” remarked Laurie McCauley, U-M provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “When our students, faculty, and visiting academics can reside, work, and innovate in the core of Detroit, we cultivate a vibrant ecosystem where groundbreaking ideas can thrive.”

Featuring nearly 235,000 square feet, 13 stories, and 313 units, the residential tower will be erected alongside the UMCI facility at the intersection of Columbia Street and Cass Avenue. UMCI plans to lease the tower, projected for completion in 2028, for a primary duration of 40 years.

“The residential element introduced by this tower is integral to the center, as it will provide our students and faculty the chance to engage in an innovative community focused on opportunities and economic growth,” stated UMCI Director Scott Shireman. “Programming will adopt a blended model that encompasses both master’s degrees and workforce development initiatives centered on technology and innovation.”
