Florida State University has declared the selection of Steve McDowell as Interim Dean of The Graduate School. McDowell, a distinguished figure with substantial expertise at both college and university tiers, holds the position of Assistant Provost for International Initiatives and is the John H. Phipps Professor of Communication.

Recently, McDowell also acted as Interim Dean of the College of Communication and Information and co-led the Task Force on International Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Scholars, and Faculty Recruitment. His leadership has been crucial in enhancing graduate education and promoting international collaboration at Florida State University.

“We are assured that Dr. McDowell’s profound insight into graduate education and his cooperative methodology will greatly benefit The Graduate School during this period of transition,” stated Joe O’Shea, vice president for Student Academic Success. “His dual responsibilities will bolster our capacity to navigate the changing landscape of international graduate students and align seamlessly with our ongoing objectives.”

As interim dean, McDowell will manage the daily functions of The Graduate School and aim to strengthen its ties within the newly established Division of Student Academic Success.

“We have a robust tradition of student assistance and preparation, with outstanding performance in graduate education and research at FSU,” McDowell remarked. “I am eager to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty in this significant role and aid in advancing the university.”

O’Shea stressed that graduate education is essential to FSU’s status as one of the premier research universities in the nation.

“We are firmly committed to enhancing The Graduate School’s potential to support our graduate scholars and promote academic excellence,” he commented.

Florida State will initiate a nationwide search for the forthcoming leader of The Graduate School later in the academic year.
