Respondus Monitor And Lockdown Browser
Many instructors require their students to use Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser when taking quizzes and exams, leading them to worry that these programs will cause additional issues on their computers or be difficult to use.
The Quick Start Student Guide provides an introduction to Respondus Monitor. It also explains how to download and access tests.
No Scheduling or Registration
Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser can protect students from abandoning an assessment before it has been submitted for grading, sharing answers with other students or searching online for questions related to it. Many colleges utilize this tool in proctored exams as a measure to protect student privacy and integrity; instructors may even allow practice tests with these tools enabled so as to familiarize students with them and identify any potential issues during real exams.
Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser differs from most proctoring software in that there’s no separate installation or registration process for students. Instructors can enable it for their courses by adding a checkbox in the test settings; once enabled, instructors can add it to course navigation or provide links in quiz instructions; students taking tests which require proctoring can also access it via Canvas’ “Fix It” button.
This tool employs a custom browser to block students from gaining unauthorized access to URLs or documents, changing applications, taking screenshots, copying questions from unprotected exams or printing unofficial copies during unprotected exams. The tool works seamlessly with Blackboard as well as third-party publishers like Pearson MyLab WebAssign McGraw Hill Connect.
After downloading and activating their exam software, students should close all programs other than the browser where they will take their exam. They must sit in an environment which is well lit, clear, and quiet while taking their assessments; depending on which Startup Sequence was chosen by their instructor they may also need to take photos, record their environment or present ID before starting their assessment.
If an instructor chooses to record video of students during assessments, it will be available in the Monitor tab of the Students menu. They can view it and report any suspicious behaviors directly to their institution. Instructors can access student videos and reports for at least a year.
No Need for a Password
Respondus Monitor And Lockdown Browser is an online proctoring tool that helps protect students’ exam taking experiences. Based on Respondus LockDown Browser – which locks down testing environments within Blackboard such that students cannot print, copy, navigate to external URLs, or access applications during examination – Respondus Monitor And Lockdown Browser uses webcam technology to monitor students and flag any suspicious activities during an exam that might indicate cheating.
ProctorU can be used to administer quizzes or exams in any classroom, lab, or remote location without needing a live proctor present. Instructors can monitor student sessions at any time via video replay; and review videos of student sessions whenever desired. It does not work with standard browsers such as Chrome or Safari and must only be used when testing through Canvas.
LockDown browser does not feature a full keyboard; only basic buttons (forward, backward, refresh and stop) are accessible. It can be displayed full screen or in window, and instructors can choose whether to display its status bar. Students cannot enter other URLs or open additional tabs unless their instructor adds links to another site in an exam question; it cannot be used on mobile devices but is ideal for use on laptops and tablets with webcam attachments.
Instructors can require students to use the Lockdown browser, as well as provide an access code in their exam settings, so as to prevent students from bypassing it if their device experiences technical or accessibility issues. This ensures a more equitable learning experience.
To give students the best chance at an easy test taking experience, it is advised that they install their Respondus tools well ahead of their quiz or exam. This allows them to test out both software and internet connectivity in a low stakes environment and identify any issues before the actual exam takes place. In addition, taking a practice test helps familiarize them with this technology while helping decrease anxiety around taking tests using it.
Auto-Launches from Any Browser
Students often utilize Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser tools when taking timed online exams or proctored exams in their Canvas courses. Faculty use these tools as a means of verifying student identities during exams; additionally, this software captures video and audio from student computers in order to detect cheating attempts and prevent it. Instructors can set their exams so students are automatically directed to download Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser prior to beginning quizzes or assessments.
Students using the browser will be instructed to close all open web browsers before automatically launching into a Canvas session containing their test. If this test requires a password, students can enter it here before exiting to their usual web browser for navigation after their exam has concluded.
Instructors may opt for another approach when setting up quizzes or assessments that require students to use Lockdown Browser and Monitor tools on their own machines, for instance when conducting student placement exams with ALEKS. This option should only be considered when instructors know from experience that a particular student will experience difficulties using software on their personal machines – something which often occurs with this option.
Respondus Monitor builds upon the features of LockDown Browser by adding video capture capabilities and industry-leading video analytics, which help prevent students from cheating during non-proctored tests. Furthermore, Respondus can detect user movement during exams to ensure no interaction among exam takers.
Note that while Respondus Monitor browser works on most computers, it does not support iPads or Chromebooks, and may not work with all assistive technology solutions. Therefore, students should carefully read both their Student Quick Start Guide and general Online Test Taking Guide before taking exams that require using Respondus Monitor.
Students needing extra assistance should consider engaging a tutor or seeking the advice of JMU Student Tech Support. There is also a 24-hour chat service available if there are issues starting exams through Monitor tool.
Easy to Setup
Respondus Monitor And Lockdown Browser makes setting up and using proctoring sessions easy for students and instructors alike. As it’s self-contained software, no scheduling sessions ahead of time or registration on Respondus website are needed – after a quick one-time installation the software launches from students’ preferred browser automatically when their exam settings require proctoring sessions to occur. Respondus supports PCs, Macs and Chromebooks!
Respondus Monitor can be easily implemented when students access Canvas and navigate directly to a quiz that requires it. Once at their desired quiz, they should locate and click the link titled, “Download Lockdown Browser”, in order to download and install this browser.
Once they’ve installed the browser, students can log into Canvas and take a non-graded practice quiz using Respondus Monitor. This step is important because it enables students to test both their hardware and internet connection in an low-stakes environment; should any issues arise during their graded exam, this makes troubleshooting simpler with either IU or Respondus support.
Students taking a quiz for which their instructor has enabled Respondus Monitor will notice an icon next to the exam title that indicates it will use webcam monitoring for monitoring purposes. Students should click this option to confirm they wish to use both their webcam and Lockdown Browser during their exam taking experience.
Lockdown Browser not only stops students from accessing any other websites or applications during online exams, but the Monitor feature also records audio and video, enabling instructors to examine what they see for suspicious activity – this feature is particularly effective in classroom or lab settings where an instructor can physically supervise students.
Engaging Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser for an exam is simple. Simply create a quiz, select the drop-down menu next to each question type and choose “Require Respondus Monitor for This Exam”, ensuring all students use both their webcams and the Monitor feature of their browser in order to take part in taking it.
