Respondus Lockdown Chromebook is an exam proctoring device that creates an inhibited test-taking environment and discourages cheating by prohibiting printing, copying, or accessing different URLs during assessments. Students cannot print copies, change URLs during an exam session and cannot copy material off of other students’ devices during assessments.

To use this tool, instructors need only enable it for each exam in Canvas and then direct their students to download the Respondus Lockdown browser extension.

It creates an easily customized testing environment in Blackboard which prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications – over 100 million exams are administered annually using Respondus Lockdown, while paper usage decreases significantly; both Windows and Mac computers can use Respondus with its Chromebook extension now being made available; it works seamlessly with existing versions of browser and is easy to install.

Installing the extension can be done on any Chromebook running a version of Chrome that supports extensions. Simply click on the RLDB download link from Blackboard, select “Add to Chrome,” log into Chrome, open a test that requires RLDB + Monitor and take it; if your instructor enabled Chromebook testing within your exam settings it should launch at its proper time automatically.

Students needing to use this application must possess a Chromebook that is compatible with it as well as Google Chrome browser on their device. Students can access LockDown Browser on any PC or Mac they own, with additional setup by instructors required for iPad usage. On college-owned or managed Chromebooks, however, Lockdown Browser will automatically be installed during an assessment requiring it. Instructors using eLearn for course delivery can use Respondus plugin for Chromebook compatibility in their course settings and disable it during individual exams, setting number of attempts allowed and whether an exam can be retaken as desired. Respondus works well with D2L, Brightspace and Schoology but unfortunately not Moodle at this time.
