Respondus Lockdown Browser Webcam Download is software designed to prevent cheating during online exams. Teachers can administer exams in Canvas while keeping students from printing, copying, visiting other URLs or accessing additional applications during tests.
Video recording also captures images of students to detect any cheaters during non-proctored exams, enabling RLDB users to practice with it before taking graded assessments with it. Students can take a practice quiz that requires it prior to sitting for their graded assessment with it.
Installation
Respondus Lockdown Browser and Webcam download (RLDB) is an important tool that instructors may require you to use when taking online assessments in Canvas. RLDB serves to create a secure testing environment during quizzes or exams and can record facial, head, and eye movements during an examination or quiz. In addition, its programs prohibit other applications on your computer as well as blocking audio/video during testing – it can be downloaded for both Windows and Mac computers and should your instructor require using it you’ll receive an invitation directly within the assessment itself if required by your instructor RLDB must be downloaded separately within it for assessments in Canvas.
Once you click the RLDB link, it will download automatically onto your computer. When downloaded, double-clicking its installer file will launch it and give instructions on how to install RLDB. When completed, quizzes in Canvas that require it can be located by clicking either Respondus icon in Brightspace course or Test page itself and providing the respondus link from within it.
Before beginning the quiz or exam, you will be required to complete a Startup Sequence that allows your instructor to verify that you are using a computer enabled with RLDB and are in an appropriate environment for taking it. The Startup Sequence includes webcam and identity confirmation questions (for instance answering security questions and showing photo identification), along with webcam checks and webcam checks; additionally your instructor may customize this sequence with additional steps as desired.
When starting the Startup Sequence, ensure your head and face are visible in full view without obstruction from any accessories, such as hats or dark sunglasses that could obscure them from view. Furthermore, avoid wearing any headphones or earbuds that could obscure your face such as hats or dark sunglasses as these could be misinterpreted by instructors as signs of cheating. If any difficulty arises while using RLDB contact your instructor who should often help troubleshoot any problems and get you back on track quickly.
Startup Sequence
Respondus LockDown BrowserTM and Respondus MonitorTM are tools designed to enhance online testing in Canvas. They prevent students from printing, copying, visiting other websites or accessing applications during an exam and ensures that a quiz cannot be submitted for grading until all questions have been completed. Respondus LockDown Browser requires students to follow a startup sequence as well as pass an audio webcam check before starting an assessment test.
Respondus LockDown browser’s startup sequence begins when a student clicks the “Take the Quiz” button for assessments that require its use, helping reduce risk of cheating by first performing a webcam check and prompting students to make sure their environment is free from distractions before beginning their quiz. Students also must show ID to the instructor; video recordings will show these checks taking place.
Respondus browser and monitor are designed to protect students against cheating; however, their use may prove challenging for students. The software utilizes students’ webcams to record their surroundings, facial expressions, finger and head movements and more – this information gets graded and assessed to alert instructors of any suspicious activity, such as someone entering the frame of their webcam during an exam or leaving their computer during one.
Software issues for students using wireless connections can often lag and cause other problems with the computer, so an ethernet connection would be preferable if possible to avoid these problems. Students should try not having paper, cell phones or any other distractions near their test area while they use their browser and monitor.
Respondus requires students to carefully follow the directions provided by their instructor, starting from reading the startup sequence (if applicable) and all exam instructions to completing any additional materials or resources without first receiving approval from their instructor – this helps prevent academic misconduct, which violates university community standards.
Quiz/Exam Directions
LockDown Browser requires a stable internet connection for quizzes or tests to function correctly, if you experience blank screens it typically means your web browser has lost the connection with your institution’s server and therefore cannot load web pages properly in your browser. In such instances, reboot your computer closer to its router before starting LockDown Browser again to access its pre-exam Webcam Check and System & Network Check pre-examinations; if these still do not work please contact your instructor and determine if relocating may be necessary.
Respondus Monitor strengthens LockDown Browser security by employing webcam technology to detect cheating during online exams. Respondus Monitor is ideal for non-proctored exams taken outside the classroom; however, instructors may also use it in proctored environments by mandating that their students use Monitor with an activation sequence including webcam check, identification verification or recording a brief video of their exam setting – then reviewing these videos or other data for evidence of cheating or suspicious behaviors during exam sessions.
While taking an exam, students cannot print, copy, visit other websites, open other applications on their computers or perform web searches or instant messaging – as well as many other functions – within LockDown Browser. Once an exam has concluded and LockDown Browser is exited, normal functionality of their computer returns.
Faculty can embed a link to a practice quiz into any course module that demonstrates how students can take an online test or exam using LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor webcam, with a quick-start guide available to them. Students clicking this link must download and install LockDown Browser before accessing their quiz or test in Canvas; once their exam is finished they should close out of it before closing out in their regular browser and signing back into Canvas as usual for any further work in that course.
Troubleshooting
If a student experiences issues while taking an exam using Respondus, they can use Canvas’ help center to contact their instructor or OIT for assistance. It is strongly suggested that students try various troubleshooting steps prior to seeking assistance from either party.
Make sure that the Respondus Lockdown Browser that they downloaded is appropriate; to verify this, check its download link; the code at the end should read “id=947241074”, unique to Emory and our instance of Canvas. Furthermore, students should ensure they have a stable internet connection as slow or intermittent connections may lead to problems during an online assessment.
Another frequently reported issue occurs when software cannot access the camera. This may be caused by third party security software blocking it or due to settings on their computer (for instance privacy or antivirus programs). If this problem arises for students, they should first try disabling any anti-virus programs running and then enable their camera again.
Finalize, when taking an exam and finding that there is a blank screen it indicates there has been communication breakdown between browser and institution’s server. In such instances, students should leave their exam and try restoring internet connectivity first before trying again. Furthermore, being close to their router increases chances of successfully reconnecting.
Respondus Monitor not only protects instructors against cheating, but it can also give instructors valuable data about student behavior during assessments. For instance, Respondus monitor can detect when students leave their desks or a new person enters video frames – providing teachers with data they can use to advise students about their assessment experience and offer further guidance to students regarding it. In some instances instructors create practice quizzes using Respondus in order to familiarize their students with its process before taking higher stakes assessments.
