Respondus Lockdown Browser Student Download Canvas

Respondus Lockdown Browser Student Download Canvas

Respondus Lockdown Browser Student Download Canvas offers you a set of tools your instructor may expect you to utilize during an online assessment, including LockDown Browser and Monitor which activate your webcam for secure testing environment.

Respondus software will appear when taking a quiz requiring it, with a link to download available both for PCs and Macs. When taking this type of exam, an icon to download Respondus will be included when clicking “Take This Quiz.” The browser version supports both operating systems.

How to use it

If your instructor requires Respondus Lockdown Browser and webcam proctoring for a quiz, follow their instructions carefully. They may require taking it in another browser or incognito window; or set availability dates when students can take their exam. Usually the requirement to use Respondus will be clearly noted on Canvas quiz links.

Respondus software limits test taker devices to only accessing Canvas quizzes, preventing printing, copying, visiting other URLs or installing applications during an assessment. Instructors can record the test taker as they take the assessment for additional security and verification purposes. Respondus browser is available free to download for both PCs and Macs – you can visit Respondus directly or click through an automated Yale download link provided when being instructed to take an assessment within Canvas.

As soon as a student clicks a quiz link requiring Respondus Lockdown Browser, a text message will inform them they must download and install Respondus Lockdown Browser before taking their assessment. They must visit the browser download page and choose between Windows or Macintosh options – our installer automatically detects which version they require; installation only needs to be performed once on each computer! Our installer also provides information regarding system requirements and an overview video – very convenient!

Once installed, students will need to login and navigate to an assigned quiz that uses this browser. When clicking Take a Quiz, a new page opens directing them back into Lockdown Browser environment where a Startup Sequence begins; this series of prompts verifies identity and testing environment as well as webcam functionality to ensure video recording of test taking session is functioning appropriately.

How to download it

Respondus Lockdown Browser must be downloaded prior to taking an online quiz or exam in Canvas, as this software locks down testing environments, prohibiting students from printing, copying, visiting another URL or accessing programs until after their quiz has been submitted for grading. Students can download Respondus Lockdown Browser through a link in their course in Canvas; should any programs needing closure on their computers be ignored without closing, instructor security settings could break and no longer protect this quiz.

Respondus Monitor (formerly ProctorU) adds webcam and video technology to Lockdown Browser in order to combat cheating during online exams. WSU instructors utilize Respondus Monitor during some online assessments; instructors can review videos of assessment sessions as well as data to assess whether an exam was administered under proctored conditions, as well as detect suspicious activities like leaving one’s computer during an exam, or an unexpected person entering its frame during testing.

Students will be informed of the requirement for Respondus Lockdown Browser when clicking a quiz link in their course, with a hyperlink and explanation of why it is required for that specific quiz. They can also visit the Respondus website directly and download the software directly.

Lockdown Browser software is available on both PCs and Macs, with limited support recently extended to iPads and Chromebooks. Once installed, students can log into their Canvas account and navigate directly to any quiz requiring Lockdown Browser, once loaded launching their Lockdown Browser dashboard and completing an initialization sequence to verify their identity and testing environment.

At startup, if a student is unable to close an application that has been blocked (for instance screen capture or instant messaging apps), their browser will prompt them with two choices – whether to continue without closing it, or cancel and open LockDown Browser themselves. Once testing is over, students may close both programs opened as well as close LockDown Browser itself.

How to install it

If you are taking an exam that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, be sure to install it prior to taking it. This customized browser increases test security in Canvas; use these steps to download and install it:

Log into Canvas, click the quiz that will use Lockdown, and find the “Download Respondus Lockdown Browser.” When clicking it will launch a download page where you need to accept terms and select your installation location before being able to begin your quiz or exam. Once downloaded you can begin!

Downloading may take several minutes depending on your internet speed. Once complete, close any programs running on your computer that may interfere with taking the quiz or exam; no printing, copying or access to other websites should occur during testing time; additionally ensure your web cam is switched off for optimal results. For any problems downloading or installing software please reach out to OIT immediately for assistance.

Lockdown Browser can be downloaded with a Yale download link before taking an exam, so that you can pre-test its function before your quiz and ensure everything works smoothly. This is particularly beneficial when using non-Emory laptops and computers. If you are uncertain whether Lockdown will run properly on your machine, ask your instructor to create a practice quiz available across all courses that allows students to test it before their actual exams; that way you will have enough time to complete all assessments successfully.

How to take a quiz with it

If your instructor has created a quiz that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, you will be given the prompt to download it before beginning the quiz. Click the download link within the quiz navigation menu in order to install this application and access its features. This browser is Windows and Macintosh compatible, and when you click the download link you will be taken directly to Yale University’s unique Respondus LockDown Browser installation download page where you will need to click Install Now in order to complete installation. Once installed, Respondus Lockdown Browser will appear as a small icon on either your desktop (Windows) or Applications folder (Mac). Before taking a quiz that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser’s use, you will be asked to close all other programs unless they connect directly to the Internet; click “Yes” to allow Respondus LockDown Browser to close other programs automatically for you.

Respondus-enabled quizzes can also be taken without using the Lockdown Browser by toggling an option in the settings menu. If your instructor uses New Quizzes instead of Classic Quizzes, however, this step may be eliminated as these new quizzes automatically make use of Lockdown Browser technology.

Once your exam is over, simply close your browser and return your computer back to its normal state. If any problems arise during your quiz attempt, contact your instructor for help; otherwise, log a ticket with Respondus detailing both what caused it and any steps taken towards solving it.

Students often encounter difficulty when performing the environmental check in Lockdown Browser due to antivirus applications blocking Respondus file transfer. If this is your situation, try disabling and retrying with no antivirus application running; note that doing this may result in the loss of data stored within your Lockdown Browser session. If unable to resolve, contact your instructor for help or contact ITS Help Desk directly if additional support is required.
