Installing or updating Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) is recommended before taking any online tests or exams that call for it. When taking exams in SMU Canvas, Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) helps students safeguard their testing settings by limiting computer or iPad use to taking quizzes until they are submitted for grading and prohibiting access to any other programs or internet material. Through the links below, instructors and students can install Respondus LDB.
The most recent LDB feature, Monitor, is a webcam recording tool that instructors can use for online tests without proctors. This feature allows instructors to record quiz attempts from students and watch the recordings in the LockDown Browser dashboard. By choosing it from the Settings menu, instructors can turn on this option for their exam.
When giving a test that calls for LDB, the instructor should let the students know to install it first. Before starting their quiz or test, show them how to access and use LDB Dashboard so that it is enabled.
A list of the quizzes in their courses that call for LockDown Browser (LDB) will be visible to students once they have installed and accessed the LDB Dashboard. Click the down arrow next to a program’s name, choose “LockDown Browser,” and then click the checkmark icon to make it usable with LDB.
LDB can be found on the left-hand course navigation menu, where it will show a list of quizzes that call for it and a button to download and enable it. They can read the Student Quick Start Guide and view the related video on the Dashboard as well.

Quizzes
Both New and Classic quizzes are supported by the Canvas Quiz module. By limiting access to other applications or information on a student computer or iPad while they are taking an online exam, Canvas integrates Respondus Lockdown Browser for New Quizzes to create a secure exam environment and prevent cheating. In order to stop students from cheating on online tests, Respondus Lockdown Browser also disables right-mouse functions, screensaver software, and print instructions.
By selecting “Quiz Settings – Require Lockdown Browser” in the Quiz Settings button on the toolbar at the top of each quiz page, instructors can instruct their students to utilize Respondus Lockdown Browser during any quiz. The phrase “Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser” will be automatically added to the title when the Save and Close button is clicked to save and apply these modifications.
By clicking the Options icon at the top of any quiz page and selecting the Enable Capture Add-On option in their toolbar at the top, instructors can allow their students to take quizzes with the screen capture add-on enabled. It is recommended that students test out how well it works with their preferred screen capture software before utilizing this feature during an exam because it must be used for all quiz sessions in proctored environments.
Students should tell the invigilator and/or eLearn support right away if they experience technical issues while taking an exam using the Respondus Lockdown Browser + Monitor feature. They should then restart their computer, run the browser again, and continue completing the exam as directed by the instructor or invigilator. Invigilators will then decide how to approach this issue most effectively.

Tests in Blackboard
Some professors assign tests in Blackboard that call for Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor use by their students. When Respondus is needed for this test, it will be indicated under Tests (in Original Course View). An error notice will prompt a student to sign in and download Respondus Browser before proceeding with their attempt to take the exam if they attempt to access it using a conventional browser without first signing into their account.
Respondus Monitor enhances Respondus Browser’s normal functionality by automating online test proctoring. It does this by filming student webcam footage while an online test is being taken and saving it to our cloud server for further analysis. Instructors are immediately notified of any potential exam breaches; students then see the video before turning in their quiz for scoring.
Upon activation, Respondus Browser will take users directly to the Canvas login screen. They should select the course that has a quiz after logging in before starting the evaluation. To regain full computer access after completing their assessment, users should close the Respondus browser.
Before starting their exam, students must read and accept the Terms & Conditions by clicking “Start Test” on their browser. They won’t be able to begin if that happens. In that case, a browser screen will ask students to end any background services, such as MegaBackup, BitTorrent, Spotify, Facebook, Skype, Instant Messaging clients, or Dropbox, that can impair performance during the test.
Respondus offers troubleshooting advice if a student has difficulties launching their browser. They should speak with their instructor or the proctor designated by the instructor if this does not aid them further.
Video Reviews
Respondus Monitor records video of student performance on Canvas, enabling instructors to more efficiently deliver exams. These films reveal the test-taking environment and the faces of the students; while this won’t completely stop cheating, it will increase the likelihood that any attempts to hide a face or a screen during an exam will be discovered this way.
For online exams in Cougar Courses (Canvas), NMSU employs its own specialized Lockdown Browser. This browser makes the testing environment inaccessible, preventing students from printing, copying, visiting another URL, or using other applications while completing an exam quiz. Additionally, until it has been turned in for grading, students are not permitted to open or close it.
You will be given the option to install NMSU’s version of Lockdown Browser when taking a quiz that calls for it. Just follow the instructions to install our version. If you are taking the quiz in a lab on campus, be sure that no other software is open on the computer you are using; Zoom, chat programs, and screen capture tools could interfere with Respondus browser functionality.
Once the browser has been installed, go to the Cougar Courses quiz that calls for it and select the Class Results action link (Chevron icon). When your class roster loads, you can use Respondus Monitor to see which students took exams. Click the plus symbol next to a student’s name to view their exam video and any proctor comments that were marked.
