Features

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a secure custom browser designed to keep students focused while taking an online exam, blocking access to other programs, applications or websites as well as screen capture features for enhanced security and eliminating any possibility of cheating during tests. Compatible with various e-learning platforms and learning management systems including Blackboard Learn and Canvas as well as iOS devices.

Respondus Lockdown Browser requires students to first download and install its software onto their computers before taking exams using it, with instructions provided by their instructor during any required quiz or test. Students can download it either directly from Respondus website or from Canvas course site of instructor; then to use it, webcam and reliable internet connection are essential, along with answering several questions regarding school name and accepting license agreement before beginning an examination session.

Respondus Lockdown Browser can be downloaded onto both Windows and Mac computers for use by students. For best results, only use the official version to avoid viruses or malware invasion. If the browser doesn’t launch when launched, try restarting the computer first; if that does not resolve it, contact your instructor or support staff immediately.

Although this method takes into account privacy issues for each individual student, its implementation still allows cheating during exams.

Respondus LockDown Browser not only protects students from using other browser windows or applications, but it can also detect cheating by recording each student’s webcam during an assessment. Artificial intelligence-powered software uses recorded video footage of test sessions to detect suspicious behavior and flag potential exam violations; an instructor can then review these video recordings of each test session and take appropriate measures against cheaters.

This version of the browser is compatible with most recent operating systems, including Macintosh and Chromebook devices. Unfortunately, Windows 10 S mode does not work with this browser and some older operating systems may experience issues with certain features such as link blocking. ITS advises faculty and students installing this browser prior to taking an online exam.

To use the software, students require a device equipped with either an internal or external webcam as well as Internet access.
