Respondus LockDown Browser Download Mac
Respondus LockDown Browser is a specialized browser specifically designed to be used during tests taken through Blackboard, preventing students from printing, copying or accessing other websites during an exam session.
Instructors may opt to utilize Respondus Monitor, enabling them to record students during exams using LockDown Browser. Students should review the Respondus LockDown Browser Student Quick Start Guide or video prior to taking any exams that require LockDown Browser.
What is Respondus Lockdown Browser?
Respondus Lockdown Browser is a custom browser developed specifically to secure testing environments within Blackboard (Canvas). Students taking exams through Respondus Lockdown cannot print, copy, go to another URL, or access applications while taking tests; thus preventing cheating during online exams.
Respondus software can be found across campus lab computers and student-owned devices at New Mexico State. Faculty may require their students to use Respondus Lockdown Browser when conducting online assessments in their courses by adding the Respondus Lockdown Browser Building Block into their course or by including a link directly to this browser page for more information about using it.
Lockdown Browser is available for Windows and Mac computers; unlike standard web browsers, however, it cannot be used on iPads or Chromebooks. Furthermore, unlike its traditional counterparts, the Lockdown Browser cannot automatically install upon accessing a quiz requiring it. Students must download it themselves ahead of time before taking an exam that requires it; by visiting an exam that requires it and accessing its requirement and link directly to it. Once downloaded, once opened it will notify students if any programs that need closing prior to commencing test will need closing and students can click “No” button cancelling its installation before closing others themselves if needed if required before beginning tests commence if required by closing other programs manually if required prior to taking an exam that requires it.
Whenever students experience browser issues, they should first check for updates or search the Respondus Knowledge Base to search for resolution. There is also an instructional video and Quick Start Guide available that may assist them. If the issue persists further, students can contact Respondus for support.
Students should become comfortable using their browser before taking tests requiring it, to ensure they can identify issues during an exam and feel more confident taking part. Practicing will give students confidence about taking part.
Practice tests provide students with an invaluable opportunity to evaluate their computer hardware and internet connection in a low stakes environment prior to taking a real exam, which will allow them to identify any issues that might surface before using Respondus Lockdown Browser for high stakes testing.
How to install Respondus Lockdown Browser on Mac?
If your instructor requires Respondus Lockdown Browser as part of a test on Blackboard, this article will show you how to install it on a Mac computer. Please follow these steps on every device that will be used during your assessment; it is crucial that all functioning browsers remain available during an exam.
Respondus Lockdown Browser is a secure custom browser designed to prevent students from printing, copying, visiting any URLs other than those intended during an assessment, or accessing other applications during an exam. Additionally, Monitor is an automated proctoring feature which allows instructors to review video recordings of students during exams in order to identify and flag suspicious activity.
Students should navigate to their assessments module and select an assessment that has Respondus Lockdown Browser enabled, followed by clicking its Apple icon to download it from there. After finding their downloads folder with an InstallLDBOEM zip file in it, double-click this file and follow its installation instructions.
Once the application has been installed, students should close all other programs (with the exception of ones used to connect to the internet) before opening Respondus Lockdown Browser OEM and beginning their examination. When prompted they will need to login using their Eagle email and password before commencing.
Once they log in, students will need to agree to the Terms of Use and conduct background and webcam checks as well as verify their safety by not wearing items which could constitute cheating violations such as headphones, hats or dark sunglasses.
After passing both background and webcam checks, students should conduct an environment check. If any issues such as browser blockage by firewall or antivirus software arises, students will need to contact the appropriate help desk immediately for assistance. Students should also note that certain features of their application may not work on campus computers connected via MASON Wi-Fi instead of EduRoam.
How to use Respondus Lockdown Browser on Mac?
Students taking non-proctored online exams through Canvas or Blackboard Learn need to first download Respondus Lockdown Browser using Yale’s custom download link (see above instructions), then double click its icon on their desktop or Applications folder (Mac).
On their initial use of the software, users will be asked to identify their institution and server so that a system check may take place to ensure all required components have been configured correctly.
Once a browser is ready to take an exam, students should close all other programs except that which connects to the Internet – especially iTunes, other media managers, file sharing agents like Bittorrent, instant messaging apps and any others which could potentially interfere with it – other than those which connect directly with it. Certain programs such as iTunes or media managers could cause browser to lock up or stop responding properly during an exam session.
If this occurs, students will receive a message asking them to close these programs; if this problem continues they should contact their instructor or LMS support for assistance.
Students can get assistance using software by consulting either its user guide (available via LMS) or Knowledge Base for answers to common issues. The user guide contains tips for getting optimal performance out of their app while troubleshooting advice is also provided in case problems arise.
Students taking exams should follow the instructions of their instructors on how to best use their webcam with software, for instance by recording answers on video so as to better monitor exam-takers.
If a student encounters issues with an application that stops responding or displays a blank window before beginning an assessment, this could be caused by security windows opening behind it. If this occurs, students should close and address all pop-up security windows before reopening it to see if that helps resolve their assessment process. It is always recommended that they use the latest version available since more recent versions tend to be more stable with fewer reported issues.
How to troubleshoot Respondus Lockdown Browser on Mac?
iTunes and other media managers, file sharing agents like Bittorent and instant messenger applications may all increase the risk of locking up or stopping responding when running over time, such as iTunes. Students should close down such programs before taking an exam; sometimes a hard shutdown may also be required (completely unplugging all power cables/batteries on laptops). They should also ensure their UNG login is active with an updated Respondus license installed – both should also ensure smooth exam experiences.
Additionally, students must ensure their browsers are updated with the most recent version. They can do this by opening their browser, clicking “About” button in toolbar (or “i”) and selecting “Check for Update.” This will present them with an option to download it if an updated version exists.
If a student is having issues during an exam, they should try rebooting their computer and closing and reopening Respondus LockDown Browser application before reaching out to their instructor for further help. If their issue continues, however, contact should be sought immediately.
Link blocking may occur when a student opens a link that’s contained within an exam, usually as the result of issues with Respondus using certain browser components that don’t work together correctly; often this can be resolved by either resetting Internet Explorer’s security settings or overall functionality settings in Internet Explorer and restarting it all over again.
Students often encounter internet disconnections while taking quizzes, leading them to lose progress on the test and experience frustration. To overcome this obstacle, they should use hardwired network connection while closing any other programs like Dropbox, Spotify or Skype on their computer before beginning an exam. Virus protection software must also be disabled before taking an examination.
If students experience internet connection problems during an exam, they should use the Student Early Exit feature in their browser to close it, resolve its source, and reopen it afterwards. If this doesn’t work they should contact their instructor and/or exam support team immediately.
