Respondus Lockdown Browser 2

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a specialized web browser designed to prevent students from using other browsers, chat programs and applications while taking an online assessment test. Additionally, Monitor is a remote proctoring software program which records and analyses student actions during an exam in order to detect cheating attempts.

Respondus Lockdown Browser may help prevent cheating in exam centers; however, it does not replace proctors. To use Respondus effectively for their Canvas quiz assessments, students need to install both browser and Monitor prior to taking an examination.

Features

Instructors should be mindful of Respondus’s remote proctoring technology when considering its inclusion in their courses. Students are required to grant it full access to their microphone and camera, which may represent an intrusion of privacy. Furthermore, Respondus uses artificial intelligence algorithms to assess whether students are being honest during exams and flag any suspicious activities it considers suspicious – thus prompting instructors to carefully consider all pros and cons before including Respondus in their courses.

One effective method for students to become familiar with Respondus is assigning them a practice exam prior to any graded assessments that require its use. This gives them time to familiarize themselves with its software while testing their computer hardware and internet connectivity in a low-stakes environment. Furthermore, students will get the chance to work with IU or Respondus support to work through any issues before their first real exam takes place.

IU advises faculty and students to install the Respondus Lockdown Browser building block well ahead of any quiz or exam that requires its use, enabling students to identify any potential issues with Respondus tools that need addressing before being assessed – thus minimizing disruptions during class sessions.

Benefits

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor are designed to assist students in creating a safe testing environment when taking an online quiz or exam. Once finished, their computer will revert back to its usual configuration; Lockdown browser prevents students from printing, searching online for answers, accessing other applications/websites or shutting down during an assessment; furthermore it records video footage of student actions during assessment for review after its conclusion.

Although these tools are helpful, they do not fully replace a proctor for on-campus exams. A proctor must still be present to monitor student use of phones, collaborate among themselves, etc. Furthermore, these tools only apply to online assessments taken on campus and cannot be used for take-at-home tests.

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor provide online instructors with a unique opportunity to create a proctored testing environment for their students outside of traditional classroom settings. Instructors can use these tools to verify student identity, ensure an exam environment that is quiet, provide support for those with disabilities and ensure accessibility for those taking exams from home or other remote locations. It should be noted, however, that when taking online exams their webcam may be active which may make some feel uneasy or anxious.

Unfortunately, this tool breaches privacy standards and relies on Artificial Intelligence to evaluate whether students are being truthful. This raises ethical concerns, as the decisions a piece of software makes about students may impact their academic careers and careers as whole.

Instructors can enable Respondus Lockdown Browser in their Canvas courses via course settings. To do so, navigate to “Edit Settings”, locate Respondus Lockdown Browser amongst course tools, click it, change its “Require Respondus Lockdown Browser” setting to On, save changes, and finally take an exam that is enabled for this feature within Canvas course. Installation

Respondus Lockdown Browser helps students create a secure testing environment on a computer for online exams. The software restricts students from accessing other websites or programs such as email or chat programs during an exam; additionally it records user’s webcam to verify identity during quizzes and tests online. Respondus Monitor may be used in combination with it or alone for proctored online assessments outside traditional testing centers – it’s available both for Windows and Mac computers.

Once installed, students can launch it from within their Canvas @ Yale account and the software will close all other applications before showing a login screen for the website where they intend to take an online quiz. They should enter their login credentials before clicking “Take Quiz.”

As soon as a student has finished the quiz, they can exit the program and return to their browser configuration. If they experience any technical problems using the software, click the Help Center icon in their browser to contact a live support representative for assistance.

Software proctoring requires only an internet connection and webcam in order to document a test taker’s identity during an online examination, although it has proven more susceptible than its traditional equivalent to cheating; students have even discovered ways to bypass security measures put in place.

Although this free student download may seem like an academic solution to cheating, it creates an inflexible testing environment which isn’t conducive to learning and violates privacy standards by placing too much trust on technology rather than human proctoring.

Respondus also provides other products, including a mobile app that enables users to take online tests from any Internet-enabled location, combined with its specialized browser for an immersive testing experience for students taking exams online. Respondus software is widely used by colleges and universities as it enables assessments to take place anytime throughout the day without traveling to traditional testing laboratories.
