Respondus Exam
Respondus Exam equips your students with all of the tools they need to access and submit assessments, with access available via the Details & Actions panel for assignments and tests.
Instructors can enable Monitor on Canvas assessments for an added layer of security by preventing students from exiting or switching applications while taking tests or quizzes. Instructors can find more information about using Monitor at Respondus Student Support Site.
Monitor
This feature allows instructors to monitor student behaviour during an exam, in order to detect and deter cheating. Students utilizing Respondus Monitor as a proctoring tool require both a webcam and browser that supports it (for instance Chromebooks, iPads or the free LockDown Browser app on iOS devices). Instructors wishing to use the Monitor feature during an exam must select “Require Respondus Monitor for this Exam” on the Advanced Settings menu and set an Access Code which prevents students from taking it without an approved password. Instructors can monitor an exam by reviewing class results through Respondus website or viewing video recording of each test session on Monitor Dashboard in LMS.
When students click on questions, the monitor records both their view and audio for instructor verification that they are alone and not using physical materials or notes during class. Video footage automatically alerts instructors if a student leaves their view, blinks or moves their eyes around; additionally it can detect when another person has entered the room to notify instructors accordingly.
Instructors wishing to use this feature on an online quiz should select “Require Respondus Monitor for this Quiz”, while for graded exams an Access Code must be created to prevent unauthorised access without valid password. This ensures that only students eligible to take the exam can sit it.
Instructors looking to use this feature for non-graded quizzes may wish to enable it by selecting “Require Respondus Monitor for This Practice Quiz”, giving students an introduction to LockDown Browser and Monitor before taking an examination graded by you. If using it as part of an exam syllabus, consider including it so students know to install and connect via Ethernet rather than WiFi for optimal results – this way preventing loss of connection that could render their answers inaccessible and prevent them from saving or submitting their exam answers.
LockDown Browser
Respondus’ LockDown Browser feature allows instructors to restrict students’ access to desktop features, apps, and web search during an exam, which helps prevent academic dishonesty by keeping test takers focused solely on taking an examination rather than other things that could distract or encourage cheating. This feature is available in any Canvas quiz or test that utilizes mobile applications as well.
Instructors looking to use this feature for quizzes or tests can enable this feature in their assessment settings, while also setting limits on students’ ability to exit or reenter assessments as well as whether or not students must keep the browser open in order to view feedback and results.
Before taking an exam or quiz, students should install Respondus tools (LockDown Browser and Monitor) as instructed by their instructor and read any special instructions given in advance to prepare themselves for any extra steps that might be needed during an actual quiz or test. Furthermore, those using an iPad that has “lock into browser” enabled will not be able to leave until their quiz or exam has been submitted successfully.
Once an assessment is underway, its screen will become filled with screens designed to assist proctoring. These may include webcam checks and/or recording videos of examination settings and/or security measures that require students to use them if enabled. If they are enabled for any assessments they will become mandatory.
Student who need to use LockDown Browser for quizzing or testing purposes can locate computers on campus with it installed in Mac Lab (St. Joe Room 103); 3M Resource and Mentoring Center (Library 1st floor); or EduTech Center (1st floor of Library). For home exams, download LockDown Browser from Apple App Store free app and it will detect and install our institution’s version of software; once this app has been downloaded it will need to close all other programs before beginning your quiz or exam.
Calculator
The Calculator feature of Respondus LockDown Browser enables students to utilize an online calculator during assessment. Instructors can enable this option for each exam by clicking on Action link (Chevron icon) and choosing Settings; select Enable calculator on toolbar for Standard or Scientific Calculators respectively and Enable calculator on toolbar if using microphone response system; for exams where students will submit audio responses directly via microphone submission click Advanced Settings > Allow another application use microphone during this exam for extra protection.
If a faculty member requires students to take an exam in a proctored lab, they can also select “Require Respondus Monitor.” The system will record video footage of each student taking their exam and send this footage back to the instructor afterward, to ensure it was taken according to plan.
As part of their efforts to combat cheating, faculty can also enable a feature to notify them if a student cannot be detected during an exam. If their head turns away or camera coverage becomes an issue, as well as hair or clothing covering their face, an alert will be generated during testing time. Furthermore, instructors may review recordings from assessments in order to confirm that all students worked alone without access to materials during evaluations.
Additionally, faculty can choose whether or not to require students to present photo ID during assessments. This feature can be especially helpful when teaching large classes as it helps faculty verify whether all the students are actually taking the exam. Furthermore, this feature may provide extra assistance and support for newcomers who may need extra guidance when using online environments.
Students should be informed that Respondus takes time to download and install on their device, making it essential they do so well in advance of taking an exam or quiz in order to address any potential issues as needed. Furthermore, students must become acquainted with how the tool operates as well as any special instructions their instructor may have provided them.
Reporting
Respondus Exam enables faculty members to easily gain access to student online assessments and review recordings thereof. Instructors can access Class Results through Course Tools by selecting LockDown Browser and Class Results respectively, to view a roster of students as well as information such as date, time, duration, review priority and grade (if available) for every exam session. Class Results pages also include links to video recordings of exam sessions, with high review priority exams being marked by automated video analysis software as requiring further investigation. A high review priority does not necessarily imply a student attempted to bypass test rules; it could simply mean leaving their seat or opening another application on their computer.
Respondus Monitor, integrated with LockDown Browser, is a proctoring option that works with students’ web cameras to maintain exam integrity by monitoring and preventing cheating during unsupervised online assessments. Used by over 2,000 educational institutions globally – including 10 in Michigan alone! – this system offers faculty an effective solution for ensuring their assessments are taken without outside assistance.
Students logged into Canvas with Respondus LockDown installed will not be able to print or access other applications or windows during online assessments. Their web camera records their face while monitoring their screen to prevent them from moving away from the exam, accessing other software or taking any actions that would compromise its integrity.
LockDown Browsers are ideal for administering online exams in classroom and proctored environments, although standard browsers may still allow students to take exams as long as you make your expectations and guidelines for testing clear. Also provide instructions regarding what resources and applications may be allowed during testing sessions.
Canvas provides the basic test creator with options to randomize questions and answers, set a time limit, prevent question backtracking, display hints, grade/score forced-choice items, grade/score them as required and more. In addition, Respondus 4.0 Test Manager included with LockDown Browser provides additional functionality to combat cheating including setting which require proctor presence or ID verification for the exam.
