Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a special web browser used for taking online quizzes in Cougar Courses (Canvas). It prevents students from printing, copying, navigating to another URL, or accessing any additional applications during assessments.

Instructors may require that their students download Respondus Lockdown Browser and/or Monitor prior to taking a Canvas quiz that requires this software. When this occurs, students will be given instructions to install it prior to beginning.

Requires a full computer

If your instructor has included a quiz in your course that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser software, a full computer is necessary to take it. This software prevents you from printing, visiting other websites or programs on your computer or closing it until it has been submitted for grading. Furthermore, Respondus Lockdown Browser enables instructors to monitor students’ performance during tests making it an invaluable classroom proctoring tool.

Students need to install the browser onto their computers by following the link provided in their exam instructions, and only then may it appear on their screens and be used for taking tests. Students should be cautioned not to download software elsewhere or from websites other than those provided as it may not work correctly.

The latest version of the software is compatible with Macs and Windows PCs, so students should make sure any exam they took in the fall still works in the spring if possible, otherwise unexpected results may occur. Furthermore, they should check if their hardware is up-to-date, as well as certifying their home setup meets requirements set out by Classroom Services if their own setup does not.

Instructors should incorporate Respondus Lockdown Browser (RLDB) into their syllabus and provide students with a link in their course container for downloading it. Instructors should also encourage their students to utilize Canvas’ practice quiz before taking any test that requires it, as well as use its practice quiz function before any exam that requires it. Finally, instructors who copy courses with RLDB enabled should access its dashboard once the copying has occurred in order to adjust settings in the new destination course.

Before beginning an exam with RLDB, it is vitally important for students to close all other programs on their machine prior to commencing the test. Otherwise, any time an application or program opens during an examination session they will receive a message asking them to close it in order to continue and should close all open applications or programs including Dell Dock and any background running programs such as Skype and Google Desktop.

Requires a webcam

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a special web browser designed to prevent students from copying and pasting text, taking screenshots or opening other websites or applications while taking an online test or survey in Blackboard. In addition, Respondus Monitor records audio and video of students taking an exam; enabling instructors to verify student identity while acting as an extra deterrent against cheating. Instructors can import the Respondus Module into Canvas courses so students must use Respondus Lockdown Browser when taking tests or surveys in their courses.

Respondus Lockdown Browser ensures that students cannot print, copy, navigate to another URL, or access applications like Word while taking an exam in Cougar Courses (Canvas). When Respondus Monitor is activated for a quiz, webcam footage from student takers during exams will be recorded using Respondus Monitor dashboard to detect possible behavior indicative of cheating; instructors can access these videos quickly for review by viewing through Respondus Monitor dashboard.

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor must be activated for every quiz you create that requires students to use this software. When this is completed, a link to download it will appear in your courses’ navigation and once installed you should follow its prompts for launching it and creating your quiz. After finishing it click the red X to close down Respondus Lockdown Browser and return to normal browser setup.

If you are using a laptop or computer with an integrated webcam, your browser will prompt you to decide whether or not you want to use it during your exam. If you select yes, an alert message will appear asking you to close any programs that have been blocked by the browser (such as screen capture or instant messaging) prior to starting the exam. If you do not wish to utilize your webcam during its use during examinations, all such programs must be closed prior to taking it.

If you are taking an exam that requires Respondus, be sure to select a well-lit and isolated room. Avoid wearing any headgear, such as hats or hoods, that obscure vision during the test; no food or liquid should be consumed during this process either; using a headset with microphone would allow better voice pickup by the browser; otherwise if it detects different tones it will flag it and lead to disqualification.

Requires a browser

Respondus Lockdown Browser, offered at New Mexico State University (NMSU), allows students to proctor online tests and quizzes. Students can utilize it in order to prevent cheating and any forms of misconduct during exams. In order to use this feature, students first install Respondus on their computers before accessing any tests through Canvas that require it; depending on which test it’s required for, webcam may also be needed depending on its requirements; tablet users should refer to specific instructions provided for that device.

Students should understand that the LockDown Browser/Monitor is a standalone browser and they cannot open it through their regular browser. Instead, they should log into Canvas and take any quiz requiring it before closing it when finished with. They should also ensure all other programs are closed prior to exiting as multiple ones running at once could create issues for this system.

Some instructors will require that their students take a practice quiz in order to familiarize themselves with Respondus Lockdown Browser, an important step toward student success with this tool. A practice quiz should be available throughout the semester with unlimited attempts allowing for multiple attempts should it be necessary. NMSU offers Respondus Lockdown browser as both lab computer download and home PC installation; ensure you are using the latest version and should anything arise, contact your instructor or Canvas Support for help immediately.

When taking a Respondus Lockdown browser test, it is vital to be in an adequate room with ample lighting and isolation. If the browser detects voices that do not match your own, it may flag them and prevent you from continuing the exam. In order to keep yourself from disqualification from taking the exam, avoid wearing any hats, scarves or sunglasses that cover your face as this may interfere with taking it properly. Furthermore, eating, drinking and making/receiving calls during an examination session are strictly forbidden and students who fail to abide by these regulations will be asked to leave classroom.

Requires a password

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a custom web browser designed to secure testing environments within Blackboard. It prevents students from copying and pasting, printing, accessing other applications, taking screenshots during exams or using mobile devices themselves during an exam session. Furthermore, Zoom will no longer run during exams while any meetings they may be involved in will also be removed automatically by this browser. Students should only use Respondus Lockdown Browser while taking online tests.

LockDown Browser settings make it possible to set a password to protect exams and you may add one as part of this exam’s security measures. Students should be warned about this password being visible to anyone accessing it; thus, warning messages shouldn’t be used as an incentive to take exams in proctored rooms but instead should encourage students to ensure test security through all available means.

Once you have created a test as normal, navigate to Course Tools and Respondus Lockdown Browser. From the drop-down arrow (1) select Modify Settings (2) then “Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this exam” before clicking “Save and Close.” You should notice that now your dashboard test indicates “Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser.

Once you are ready to administer an exam, click on the Launch LockDown Browser button on the Test Summary Page. If using mobile devices such as phones or tablets, ensure the app has been downloaded before taking a quiz.

If you are using a mobile device, the app can be downloaded from Apple App Store; on desktops it can be found either in Applications Folder or Bootcamp Applications Drawer and even downloaded directly through Bootcamp Bootcamp Bootcamp link on Test Summary page. Once launched in browser you will see a prompt to confirm you want to launch app before being asked for password which will be provided by instructor.
