The University of Washington has been ranked No. 7 worldwide on a roster of the leading universities driving global innovation, reported by the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate. This ranking is part of a study released on January 30 by Clarivate, an analytics firm.

The UW secured the second position among public universities in the U.S., following the University of California, Berkeley, which earned the fourth spot overall, according to Clarivate. Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology lead the list, in that order.

For the study, Clarivate examined the impact of research in molding global industrial innovation and societal consequence, utilizing data and expert analysis from academic research and patent citations. The research highlighted the top 50 universities mentioned in academic papers that garnered the most citations from patents awarded to companies and organizations listed on the Top 100 Global Innovators 2024 catalog.
