Kenzie Locke, a junior majoring in women’s studies, did not anticipate developing a passion for ecology. However, during her internship at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, the hours spent exploring scenic paths, observing blossoming species, and collaborating with staff in the greenhouse turned out to be remarkably captivating. She participated in plant mapping and educational programming and left with a greater insight into how green environments influence health and foster community connections.
“I never thought I would take pleasure in ecology work, but discovering how green spaces enhance health truly broadened my perspective,” Locke stated. “The garden accomplishes far more than I had previously understood, ranging from environmental restoration to education for all ages. It unites people.”
Locke is among 21 undergraduate students who took part in the 15th cohort of the Public Service and Outreach (PSO) Student Scholars program, a key initiative at the University of Georgia that connects students with internships within one of UGA’s PSO units. Each year, participants dedicate the fall semester to learning about the mission and activities of UGA’s eight Public Service and Outreach units, followed by being matched with one for the spring, gaining practical experience in how the university fulfills its land-grant obligation to assist Georgia communities.
