This includes wagers on a player’s total points, rebounds, or assists. This niche market is particularly vulnerable to manipulation, a concern NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has openly recognized as far too accessible for exploitation,” Lorenc explained.

“The susceptibility of prop bets to corruption can be attributed to three primary factors: spot-fixing, which allows athletes to influence specific statistical results through minor, covert actions without impacting the game’s final score; the substantial advantage provided by insider knowledge, where confidential information about player injuries or availability gives gamblers an unfairly strong advantage; and the susceptibility of lower-paid athletes, who may find themselves tempted to alter their performance for quick financial gain.”

Understanding the fix: Three reasons prop bets can be easily compromised

“This scandal underscores the significant difficulty in monitoring these micro-markets. The main challenge arises from three key areas: the necessity for more standardized regulations, limitations on high-risk bets, and corporate oversight,” Lorenc remarked. “The establishment of uniform standards is crucial, as the lifting of the federal betting prohibition in 2018 resulted in a varied landscape of state-specific regulations, making a more cohesive federal framework essential for an effective integrity system.

“Additionally, both the NBA and the NBPA concur on the importance of regulating high-risk wagers, actively collaborating to implement stringent restrictions on player prop bets to mitigate the chances of performance manipulation and player involvement in misconduct. Lastly, there are concerns about corporate monitoring, as experts fear that the financial motivations of legal sportsbooks—despite their capacity to identify unusual activities—may conflict with the security protocols required to effectively monitor the substantial volume of micro-bets.

“In conclusion, the NBA betting scandal serves as a stark reminder that to preserve public trust, professional sports must balance their lucrative ties with gambling through strong, centralized regulations that protect the integrity of the game, even at the risk of sacrificing some revenues generated by the most manipulable bets, especially those related to individual player performance.”
