Whether nestled among bacon and lettuce, resting on a dollop of cottage cheese, or just dashed with salt and freshly cracked pepper, nothing compares to a homegrown sandwich tomato.
Before the first sandwich can be crafted, and prior to gardeners starting their planting, establishing trellises, and combating pests, home gardeners must determine which tomato varieties to incorporate into their planting schedule.
To simplify the decision, we reached out to University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agents and Georgia Master Gardener Extension Volunteers to rank their top sandwich tomato varieties based on what they would most likely suggest to home gardeners throughout the state. Bob Westerfield, a UGA Extension consumer horticulturalist from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, compiled the preliminary list.
