Established in 1997, the Live Near Your Work initiative continues to be favored by employees at both WashU and BJC. Throughout the years, it has assisted over 500 faculty and staff individuals by providing a cumulative total of $4.4 million in forgivable home loans designated for down payments and closing expenses.
The main objective of Live Near Your Work is to foster neighborhood stability through affordable and accessible home ownership. To enhance this goal, and to focus on areas near the campus and hospital, the program will implement several changes commencing July 1.
- Properties priced at $300,000 or below will qualify for the program.
- Employees are required to complete 12 months of service before they can be eligible for Live Near Your Work support.
- Live Near Your Work will narrow its geographic focus, targeting neighborhoods north of Delmar Boulevard. The areas of Skinker-DeBaliviere, DeBaliviere Place, and Forest Park Southeast, along with segments of the Central West End, will also be included, as will the current areas in University City.
“Live Near Your Work is an excellent initiative offering a dual advantage,” remarked Lisa Weingarth, senior advisor to the chancellor and executive director of the “In St. Louis, For St. Louis” program. “It aids WashU employees in their home-buying journey while simultaneously bolstering our neighboring communities. The adjustments to the program will help maintain its core objectives and ensure its sustainability well into the future.”
