New instructors received a hearty reception from the University of Georgia on Aug. 1 during the New Faculty Orientation.

“I am delighted that you have become a part of our remarkable academic community,” stated President Jere W. Morehead. “This is a thrilling time to belong to this institution, and I am grateful for all that our faculty do to enable our remarkable achievements. In all of the university’s pursuits, faculty are pivotal, and you have my utmost respect and appreciation for the exceptional work that you undertake.”

The occasion, organized by the Office of Faculty Affairs, offered a summary of the information, resources, and tools accessible to assist faculty in thriving at UGA.

“Exceptional faculty like those present here are the fundamental strength of any outstanding university,” expressed Benjamin C. Ayers, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. “That’s why, as we welcome you to UGA, we aim to invest in you so that you can help foster excellent outcomes for our students, this institution, and the state of Georgia.”

Conducted at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel, the event offered new faculty members a chance to explore UGA’s excellence in pedagogy, research, and service. For instance, new faculty had the chance to hear insights from veteran faculty members. They also engaged with a select group of students from the Student Government Association, School of Public and International Affairs, and Panhellenic Council during the Bulldog Experiences student panel.

New faculty also discovered UGA’s comprehensive public service and outreach mission, its research focuses, avenues for further professional growth, and cultural landmarks of the university. During the UGA Traditions, Legends, and Lingo session, Eric Johnson, the director of the UGA Visitors Center, familiarized new faculty with treasured UGA symbols like the Arch and the mascot Uga XI, along with the university’s rich history since its inception in 1785.

“During New Faculty Orientation, our aim is for incoming faculty to gain the right tools and resources to excel in their roles,” noted Elizabeth Weeks, interim vice provost for academic affairs and associate provost for faculty affairs. “We aspire for them to depart the day invigorated and inspired for the upcoming classes, the year ahead, and their enduring careers here at UGA. We also intend for them to form new connections and become acquainted with university resources that will assist them not only in their academic journeys but also as members of our community.”

The orientation also serves as an initiation for Keys to UGA, a series of workshops designed for incoming faculty yet open to all faculty, regardless of their duration at the institution. Future sessions will cover themes such as active learning, an introduction to UGA’s learning management system, planning and time management tactics for academic life, utilizing UGA Libraries, and mentoring students.
