The beneficial influence of Big Ten universities throughout the Pacific Northwest and nationwide will be showcased in a new 30-second advertisement that will be broadcast during sporting events involving conference members, commencing with this week’s football season opener.

The advertisement – titled “We Are Present” – will air alongside the popular “Maps” segment. The new initiative emphasizes how the University of Washington and other Big Ten schools contribute to making America healthier, safer, and more prosperous through various means, including groundbreaking medical research, healthier food development, and stimulating economic expansion.

“The University of Washington proudly partners with our Big Ten counterparts to demonstrate the significance of education, research, and innovation through this cooperative campaign. Utilizing one of the most prominent platforms in college athletics, these advertisements illustrate to a wide audience how student-athlete competition brings people together while also enhancing the impact of each university within the Conference,” stated University of Washington President Robert J. Jones, who previously chaired the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors and, along with President Emerita Ana Mari Cauce, supported this initiative.

“As a member of the Big Ten, the UW enhances its prominence for its role—locally, nationally, and internationally—in advancing progress and nurturing stronger communities across the country,” added Jones.

In total, the 18 institutions within the Big Ten Conference educate over 817,000 students and conduct $19.6 billion in research annually. The vast majority of this research is made possible through the support of the American populace and federal investments in the nation’s global leadership in health and innovation.

“The Big Ten Conference consists of 18 elite universities sharing a unified mission of research, education, and community service, alongside shared practices and policies that uphold the importance of academics in the lives of student-athletes,” remarked Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “We are eager to showcase the impact our member institutions have daily in their local communities and across the nation.”

“We Are Present” will be aired on both linear and digital platforms during sporting events involving Big Ten institutions, utilizing airtime designated for the Conference as part of its media agreements, including the Big Ten Network (BTN). From inception to execution, Valentina Gomez Bravo, executive creative director in University Marketing & Communications (UMAC), led a diverse team of creative professionals from Big Ten member universities in crafting the advertisement under the auspices of the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

This new project builds on previous Conference initiatives, including research snippets that highlight the influence of university research, which air during select BTN sporting event broadcasts. This included features about the UW last season showcasing the College of the Environment’s ocean research and the Clean Energy Institute’s initiatives to create longer-lasting batteries.

“We Are Present” marks the first in a planned trilogy of advertisements, which throughout the series will include footage from all 18 universities.
