MagLab Deputy Director Tim Murphy converses with young hosts McKenzie and Daniel during the recording of Discovery Education’s Virtual Field Trip to the National MagLab.

Emerging scientists around the globe can delve into the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, located at Florida State University, through an innovative partnership between Discovery Education and Sesame Workshop, which provides students a glimpse behind the scenes of this unique national facility.

“Meet the Magnets: A Virtual Field Trip to the U.S. National Science Foundation National High Magnetic Field Laboratory” is scheduled to debut on May 6 for elementary school learners, families, and educators nationwide. Teachers can enroll their classes to participate using the registration page here. Each virtual field trip can be accessed on-demand at no charge after its release at 7 a.m. ET on the premiere date. Additional materials are also offered to enhance learning, including a standards-aligned companion guide with hands-on activities and resources for educators.

The virtual field trip accompanies two youthful hosts as they explore the inner workings of the MagLab. The program showcases laboratory scientists and personnel, featuring Director Kathleen Amm.

“It was an absolute joy hosting the Discovery Education and Sesame Workshop team at the lab. We are excited to introduce more young individuals to the groundbreaking research conducted by our talented scientists,” Amm expressed. “Our goal is to share the marvels of science with youth and inspire them to pursue STEM careers. This video serves as a fantastic tool to convey that message.”

The primary funding agency for the MagLab, the U.S. National Science Foundation, sponsored the virtual field trip to commemorate its 75th anniversary on May 10.

Throughout the virtual field trip, participants discover how the lab constructs the most powerful electromagnets globally and how these magnets facilitate pioneering research, while also understanding the essential functions magnets serve in our daily lives. The hosts create their own electromagnets, peer into the world’s most potent magnet and hover on the “human levitator,” powered by magnets and superconductors.

“Virtual field trips provide students with exposure to the real world and fresh concepts. Covering a wide range of topics, these virtual trips offer educators innovative ways to encourage student exploration and learning,” stated Ashley Powers, Senior Director of Partner Impact at Discovery Education.

Discovery Education is the developer of key K-12 educational solutions utilized in classrooms globally. Discovery Education serves approximately 4.5 million educators and 45 million students around the world, with its resources being accessed in almost 100 countries and territories.

The MagLab will host a Tallahassee premiere of the virtual field trip on May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Challenger Learning Center, located at 200 S. Duval St. in downtown Tallahassee.

This free public event will take place in the Challenger Center’s IMAX theater.

Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to meet some of the individuals featured in the video, including the hosts and MagLab scientists and staff. MagLab personnel and volunteers will also conduct several engaging science demonstrations.

The MagLab is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the State of Florida. Each year, the lab welcomes nearly 2,000 researchers from across the globe who utilize the MagLab’s unique magnets for studies involving materials, magnet technology, energy transmission and storage, health, environmental science, and the enigmas of the universe.

The U.S. National Science Foundation, commemorating its 75th year, is an independent federal entity that champions science and engineering across all 50 states and U.S. territories. Established in 1950 by Congress, NSF aims to promote scientific advancement, enhance the national health, prosperity, and welfare, and ensure the national defense.
