Lockdown Download

If an instructor has created a quiz or test that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, students will need to access this application from within their course in order to use it during exams in order to prevent cheating and ensure fairness. It locks down computers to prevent cheating during an exam session.

This software is available on both PCs and Macs, with an experimental beta version being made available to Chromebook owners as well.

Downloading

Respondus LockDown Browser download is a free custom browser designed to restrict most functions on any device, from email and instant messaging to other applications or websites being launched by students and disabling right mouse clicks and function keystrokes. Designed specifically for online assessment in schools or home environments, such as Canvas Moodle Schoology Sakai the Respondus LockDown Browser comes equipped with Respondus Monitor which allows instructors to observe student behaviour during exams.

This program is currently supported on both Windows and Mac computers, with limited support for iPad and Chromebook devices as of recent. Students can utilize the tool in conjunction with a standard browser for testing purposes; however, before downloading and installing the software on their computers to ensure it meets institutional specifications. Instructors may provide students with links to download/install it through UAB course websites or quizzes that require students to use this tool; additionally instructors should consider creating non-graded practice quizzes that introduce students to its features prior to taking graded exams using it for graded exams.

Students visiting the installation page for software will be instructed to select their operating system and follow instructions for installing it. Some operating systems may require opening and activating of user account control windows before installing programs; once completed, these must then be launched on test day for proper functioning.

To launch Lockdown software on their computer, a student should close all programs that connect to the Internet except one, such as Respondus browser shortcut on desktop or Applications folder and access exam on HuskyCT if it requires password entry; once complete they can exit browser and re-open regular browser for regular online content access if another test using Lockdown is needed; to download and install Lockdown again they will have to follow these same steps again.

Installation

Whenever an instructor requires Lockdown Browser for any quiz or test, students will receive an alert in Canvas and must follow its installation instructions for either Windows or Macintosh operating systems. Once downloaded, students can confidently take their exam knowing that their answers will be accurately recorded while remaining confidential.

If you are an instructor looking to use Lockdown Browser as part of an online assessment, here are the steps:

Make sure your students have access to computers with reliable Internet connections, and provide instructions for installing Lockdown Browser on the course website so they can easily locate them prior to assessment. It may also be beneficial to post a sample quiz so students can practice using Lockdown Browser prior to taking their actual exam; newcomers might find it confusing at first; using practice quizzes will allow them to familiarize themselves with this tool before their test or quiz takes place.

Once students have successfully installed HuskyCT software, they can log on and begin taking tests or quizzes through HuskyCT. Before beginning an examination or quiz, it is recommended that all other programs except those needed to access the Internet be closed down along with any blocked ones such as screen capture or instant messaging programs that might obstruct access. Furthermore, students should make sure their computer has all updates installed including the operating system update if taking their exam on a lab computer; should assistance be required with this step, contact the lab administrator immediately for help if taking tests on lab computers if this step needs assistance with taking your examination or quiz.

Students taking an examination should keep their mouse pointer within the quiz frame and refrain from clicking outside it or on any back/forward buttons. They can check to make sure they have the latest version by selecting “About” from the toolbar and clicking on the version number; in case of emergency they should also know how to exit/shutdown their program and their computer(s).

Troubleshooting

If students are experiencing problems with Respondus Lockdown Browser it’s most likely due to other applications running on their computers that interfere with its lockdown functionality – this includes anti-virus applications, VPN programs and even browser itself. To maximize performance before taking an exam with Respondus Lockdown Browser all other programs including operating system and browser should be closed prior to taking exams as this will reduce any troubleshooting issues which might otherwise arise.

If the lockdown browser starts interfering with other applications, a pop up alert will prompt them to sign out or switch off their software before closing their browser. It is essential that students follow these prompts because without it they won’t be able to take their quizzes.

Respondus Lockdown Browser can be downloaded by students from Canvas courses (the link can be found in the Help section of the left-hand column), iPad and Chromebook devices, and requires a high speed internet connection; Wi-Fi may work but we advise using wired Ethernet whenever possible to eliminate dropped or interrupted connections that might result in error messages. Mobile hotspots or cell phone data networks should not be used as these connections could fluctuate and cause issues for the browser.

An unfortunate but common scenario occurs when students attempt to access formative assignments in Canvas Commons and receive an error message with “Fix It” instructions from Canvas that indicates their browser has failed to connect with it. This may be caused by changing quizzes from semester to semester or copying them over to another course in the Commons platform.

This error usually arises because of security software restrictions which prevent their browser from properly scanning their environment, this can be remedied by temporarily relaxing their security software and then returning it back to normal state. A secondary common issue could be an unstable or slow Internet connection for which we recommend switching to wired connection or moving closer to their router as solutions.

Removing

If your browser is acting up or won’t even launch at all, this could be caused by conflicts with other programs on your computer. Close any unnecessary programs (excluding wireless/network connections and anti-virus software ). This should help resolve the problem.

if these steps don’t solve the issue, it could be due to corrupted installation of program or an incompatible version of Java. If these solutions don’t help resolve it, try switching browser or downloading different version of Java – these may help!
