Lockdown Chromebook

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor allow students to take exams using their Chromebooks using our iLearn App, making it simpler than ever for instructors to avoid cheating during assessments.

Chromebooks may be popular among K-12 educators, yet they may not always be ideal for use in an academic environment due to their focus on working remotely in the cloud and automatic updates that reduce risk from viruses.

Features

JCCC has enabled Respondus Lockdown Browser with the capability of supporting Chromebook devices for online proctoring, giving educators and students alike greater convenience. When students click the Respondus Lockdown Browser install link provided to them, Respondus automatically detects their Chromebook device and prompts for download; when that download has finished, students will be directed to Google Chrome web store with instructions to select “Add to Chrome” to install their RLDB extension.

Once installed, this app will launch into Kiosk mode, restricting access to any other applications on their device until after they complete their exam. This provides students with an ideal way to avoid distractions and ensure they remain focused solely on answering exam questions. Furthermore, instructors may set a Quit Password that may be shared with students should unanticipated circumstances arise during their test.

Once a student has finished taking an exam, they are instructed to either press their physical power button or sign out in order to exit Lockdown Browser mode. If their device’s physical power button has become inoperable or unresponsive, however, the application will prompt them to perform a software shutdown instead and allow for restarting and continuing taking their exam at another time.

Instructors can also configure an Early Exit feature that allows students to quickly leave an application if they experience technical difficulties with their device, which is especially beneficial for Chromebook users who could otherwise encounter broken power buttons that impede test-taking experience.

Before, students with PCs or Macs using Respondus Lockdown Browser were only able to take Canvas quizzes and exams with increased integrity thanks to Respondus Lockdown Browser application installed. Now Chromebook owners can take part by taking advantage of a Chromebook extension of Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor which includes additional features to support online proctoring.

Requirements

Lockdown Chromebook is an innovative piece of software specifically tailored for students that aims to prevent cheating. By restricting access to third-party applications that permit chat and screen sharing, the Lockdown Chromebook protects students against cheating by keeping them from accessing any third-party apps which allow chat or screen sharing – meaning they cannot use chat apps during exams to ask their classmates for answers! Furthermore, its goal is also to stop students googling answers and limit taking screenshots or printing anything out from their Chromebooks.

To use the application, students must first connect to an appropriate Learning Management System (LMS), such as Canvas. Once connected, their LMS will provide them with a link for downloading their browser – any other site might provide outdated versions that won’t function correctly! Upon downloading their browser application they’ll be taken back to a webpage which instructs them where their exam can be found within their LMS.

Once they have the appropriate URL, students can begin taking their exam. The extension won’t allow access to any other applications or websites until they complete their assessment, making it important for students to carefully follow all instructions provided; otherwise if their browser keeps prompting them to install again then clearing cache and cookies might help ensure success next time around.

Students looking to exit LockDown Browser mode must either sign out of their device or press on its physical power button – making this feature helpful if a student needs to quickly leave during an exam session. For assistance if they experience any issues with their browser application it’s advised they contact their school or district tech support team for help.

Respondus LockDown Browser add-on is currently compatible with Blackboard Learn, D2L, Brightspace and Moodle; however, Schoology users should use another solution. Educators are advised to set up a practice quiz in their course prior to using Respondus for the first time so students have an understanding of its navigation and function. Installation

Lockdown Browser Extension is now available to students to install on their Chromebook computers. When they navigate to an exam or quiz in Canvas that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, the extension will automatically download to their device and launch when they click “Take the Quiz.

The new extension works just like its Kiosk app predecessor, yet is much simpler and user-friendly. Students should ensure their extensions are updated, and close any other programs or apps before beginning an exam. Furthermore, making sure there’s enough storage space on their hard drives is also useful in installing Lockdown software installer.

Students clicking the Take the Quiz button in Canvas are taken to a page which states, “This quiz requires Respondus Lockdown Browser; please launch it.” Clicking this link will prompt them to download and install the Respondus Lockdown Browser extension from Google Chrome web store before returning back into their course in Canvas for taking their quiz or exam.

Rutgers University recently extended Lockdown browser access to students using Chromebook devices, in addition to existing PC or Mac usage of this application. While still in beta form, this Chromebook version offers features not currently available for PC/Mac users.

Students looking to access the Blackboard version of Respondus Lockdown Browser should click on their course’s Faculty/Student Resources tab, select Respondus Browser for Chromebook link and then a pop-up window will open with instructions for installing and adding this application directly onto their Chromebooks. After doing this, students can navigate directly to any Blackboard tests requiring its use and take them. To gain further insights into its capabilities and limitations as used by students please visit Respondus Knowledgebase which contains detailed descriptions that help both faculty and staff better understand its capabilities as well as its capabilities and capabilities for use by their students.

Support

Lockdown Browser doesn’t always launch when needed; when students click “Take the Quiz” in Canvas it may lead to a page stating, “This quiz requires Lockdown Browser to be enabled, please launch it.” Therefore it is imperative for students to ensure their Chromebook has been fully shutdown before taking tests with this extension active and that all applications and internet connectivity speeds remain at optimal levels before attempting tests with it active.

After an exam with the extension activated has started, its browser cannot be closed or restarted until after its assessment has been submitted for grading – this prevents students from searching Google for answers or conversing with fellow classmates during class. Students may still view their assessment feedback but must do so within the same session they took their test.

During an assessment, the browser automatically disables copy and paste, right-click menu options, function keys and keyboard shortcuts as well as stopping the clock to prevent students from cheating during their assessment. Furthermore, its lockdown feature prevents them from signing out of sessions prematurely while keeping their screen from going dark until their assessment has been submitted for grading.

After submitting an assessment, Chromebooks prompt students to press either the physical power button or sign out in order to exit Lockdown Browser mode. If this process does not complete successfully or has a broken physical power button, browser mode may remain active until battery power is removed from the machine.

For Respondus Monitor proctoring solutions to function properly, each Chromebook in your class must have the Respondus Monitor app installed to allow students to utilize it. You can find this on Google Play’s web store and can follow these instructions to install and download it:
