Features

LockDown Browser Respondus Download Mac is an application program that creates a secure environment for online testing, blocking unauthorized applications from running on computers and preventing students from using external devices during exams. It was developed to assist instructors proctor online assessments and prevent cheating during examinations while instructors can also use its Monitor extension to detect any suspicious activity during an assessment test. LockDown Browser Respondus Download Mac can be found free-of-charge at campus computers for students.

Before an exam, students should install and run RLDB to make sure it functions as intended on their computer. They should close all programs except one used to connect to the internet as well as any that are blocking webcam access. Finally, it is strongly suggested they update to the latest version by clicking the About button in their toolbar and viewing their versions history.

Students wishing to install RLDB should follow their instructor’s instructions and download and install from NMSU’s Lockdown Browser installer, available here: https://www.nmsu.edu/academics/libraries/document/Lockdown_Browser/download.html Once downloaded, students should click Run then Windows icon for PC users or Mac icon for Mac users before selecting Windows icon or Mac icon respectively; after which, an automatic.zip file containing either pkg. or exe will open automatically from within this installer file for download or installation purposes.

Windows and Mac users should double-click either file to unpack automatically; once unpacked, users should follow on-screen instructions to complete installation of RLDB for Canvas exams at New Mexico State University.

Students should regularly keep RLDB up-to-date and run a practice test prior to taking an exam requiring it, to ensure it runs seamlessly on their computers and prevent issues on test day. Instructors should create a practice exam in their courses that calls for the use of RLDB, providing students with an uncomplicated way to test it prior to taking their first quiz with it.

Installation

To take an online exam using Respondus Lockdown Browser, it will first require downloading and installing the program on your computer. Blackboard Proctoring Software ensures students can only access the test environment within Blackboard, and cannot print, copy, go to another URL or access other applications during an online assessment. When used in combination with Respondus Monitor webcam proctoring software it provides an effective means of proctoring online assessments: once an exam begins a student becomes locked into their browser and cannot exit until submitted for grading; also stopping web searches, instant messaging or minimization from occurring during assessment time.

When taking an exam that requires Lockdown Browser and Monitor, be sure that the environment is well-lit and you are easily visible to the camera. Furthermore, avoid wearing head or face accessories such as headphones/earbuds/dark sunglasses/hats/masks as these could interfere with software functioning or even cause violations during exam taking. Students looking to download software should navigate to their assessment module and select an assessment with Lockdown Browser enabled, where a popup window will appear with an Apple icon for them to click and download the program onto their devices – this process should only need to be repeated once per device.

Once downloaded, the file will appear in their download folder and they must double-click the installer and follow its prompts. Any programs which may interfere with its functioning such as screen capture or instant messaging applications must also be closed out prior to installation; after which, students should verify they have read and accepted the license agreement.

Compatibility

Lockdown Browser creates a limited testing environment that prevents students from printing, copying, visiting another URL or accessing applications while taking an exam. This technology is especially helpful in lab environments to combat cheating during online tests and can prevent cheating during in-lab exams. In order to utilize it effectively, students must install this browser onto either their personal computer or iPad (access via iPad will require further setup by your instructor).

Once installed, students can quickly take tests that require Respondus Lockdown Browser – this process is fast and effortless; only needing one download compared to some learning systems’ link automatically downloading it during tests that need it.

When students click a link to download their browser, they are taken directly to a page showing which version of software has been licensed by their institution and where to get the correct installer for their operating system. Furthermore, this installer will prompt them to agree to terms and conditions of using their browser.

After installing, students will need to close any programs running in the background on their computer that could cause LockDown Browser to freeze up or stop responding; this could delay starting their exam, so restarting or reaching out to their instructor for more assistance may be required.

Blackboard Learn Original (UToledo’s LMS) does not support all features of Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser, including their calculator and extended keyboard functions; therefore limiting students from taking exams requiring special characters or symbols.

Security

The browser limits access to the Internet and other programs on a student’s computer or iPad during an exam or quiz, thus eliminating any chance of cheating on an online quiz or exam by using other programs to answer questions. Furthermore, this browser also prevents students from saving answers or moving onto subsequent questions when clicking incorrect answers – both features found on OIT lab computers as well as most Lied Library computers; instructors with permission can even install this software onto an iPad.

Install your software well ahead of any exams to avoid last-minute problems and conduct a practice quiz, using both your browser and webcam (if applicable) to verify that everything works as intended.

Before taking a quiz, it is best to close all other programs on your computer and unplug any additional monitors. Furthermore, your internet connection should be reliable and high speed – an Ethernet connection would be optimal as wireless may experience dropped service during an exam and hamper its administration.

Lockdown Browser may become inoperable due to certain programs running on a computer, including iTunes and media managers, file sharing applications like Bittorent, instant messengers and instant message applications. To address this, it may be beneficial to relax firewall and antivirus/internet security settings and add the domains used by Lockdown as exclusions.
