Lockdown Browser Nbt
Lockdown Browser provides students with a secure online environment for completing exams in a proctored test environment, including real-time discussion with an adviser through chat function throughout each exam session.
On the Wednesday before their test day, students are required to participate in a simulation that includes photo and ID verification and requires them to download Lockdown Browser.
How to install
If Lockdown Browser is needed for an exam, students must first set it up on their computers before taking the test. Students are taken directly to a page with more information about how and why Lockdown Browser must be downloaded when they click a quiz link within Canvas that requires its use. Once it has been saved on their desktop (Windows) or Applications folder (Mac), students can run it directly.
A pop-up window that appears as students open their browsers can ask them to end particular programs. Closing these programs, while not required, aids in ensuring that software performs at its best.
Preparing for the test
The NBT is a test that determines a student’s academic preparation for university by evaluating academic literacy, general knowledge, and math skills. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nationwide sessions for the NBT have been postponed until lockdown level 1 can be reached. Students can still take this test online; further information is available here.
The university suggests that all students take a practice test prior to their graded exam if they plan to write an online exam using Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) and Respondus Monitor with live proctoring. This will assist students become familiar with its features and remember their start code in time for an exam.
Go to your course and click the quiz link to take a practice test. You will be prompted to download LockDown Browser University Edition (this version does not currently operate on iPads or Chromebooks) when you click the quiz link, which will also display an explanation of the LockDown Browser need and open the quiz’s web page in a new tab or window in your browser.
Please Note: Students should close their browsers and deal with any security pop-ups that may have appeared if they experience browser problems while taking the quiz. Programs running in the background that use Java or the Internet, such as iTunes media managers, file sharing services like BitTorrent, and instant messaging services like Viber or Skype, may be to blame if their browser abruptly stops functioning and their screen fills with an unresponsive white page.
Students should make sure their devices are charged and have enough data before an online exam, which might last up to three hours. Should their own devices not function as intended, pre-installed laptops may also be useful.
On the day of the test
You must take these steps to prepare your computer if your instructor asks you to use Lockdown Browser as part of a quiz or test in Canvas. Students should make sure they have a fully charged battery and 500MB or more of data. They may also be able to keep internet connections with the use of an Ethernet connection or laptop connect card, and liquid refreshments may be helpful in preventing hunger and dehydration throughout tests. Students should not open laptops or computers during session logouts, toilet breaks, or to enable screensaver/sleep mode or any other devices that enable computers while taking the test.
Students will see an explanation and a link for Respondus Lockdown Browser once the quiz or test has started. This browser works to prevent cheating by forbidding students from printing, taking screenshots of their screens, accessing other websites or applications, or opening programs. Additionally, Respondus Lockdown Browser could ask students to submit their IDs for verification or take a recording of their surroundings to make sure they are the only ones in the room.
For best results, students using LockDown Browser should connect over an Ethernet connection. As wireless, USB modem, or mobile hotspot connections are frequently unreliable and can cause problems during tests, doing this will provide them the strongest connection to the Canvas server and help reduce the likelihood that their internet access will be interrupted.
Students are strongly advised to close any other programs running on their computers before starting to use the Lockdown Browser because they could slow it down or stop responding, such as media players like iTunes and Windows Media Player, Bittorrent file sharing software, instant messaging programs, and any others. When using a Dell Dock, all such programs can be disabled from the application menu or task tray.
After the test

Students can easily take an online exam with LockDown Browser. They log into their learning system before going straight to their exam page at the start of an exam, exactly like they would when using a regular browser.
