Lockdown Browser Download Student
Respondus Lockdown Browser Download Student is a free customized browser designed to increase the security of online assessments in Canvas. It prevents students from printing, changing web addresses, switching tabs or using their other applications while taking an assessment.
Install it well ahead of your quiz or exam for maximum effectiveness and to prevent right click, function keystrokes and source code abuse, as well as recording screen shots for proctoring purposes. It is highly advised to set this software in motion in advance!
How to Install
If your instructor has assigned Respondus Lockdown Browser as part of a quiz, before beginning it on your computer you will need to install and activate it on it. Instructors use this software to restrict students from accessing other programs, websites and calculators while taking an online test or exam. Your instructor should provide a link in your quiz information which links directly to Respondus website’s software installer for easy setup – click it and follow its instructions; these may differ depending on operating systems used.
Once you’ve installed Respondus Lockdown Browser, log into Canvas and locate the quiz that requires it. Your instructor should have noted the quiz as using Lockdown Browser within its quiz link, and follow these instructions to download and install it. Please allow at least 15 minutes for installation if other exams or tests require this software.
Once the installation process is complete, open Respondus and accept its Terms of Use before following on-screen instructions to configure your machine for testing. When complete, click Finish and the software will close allowing you to login to WSU Blackboard classes; if your instructor included an optional software component known as Monitor it may also need installing separately.
Step 8 is the Facial Detection Check. Simply look into the camera and make sure that no glasses, hats, or anything else might interfere with face recognition. After performing this step you will receive a confirmation message and can begin taking your exam.
If your instructor has enabled Respondus Monitor webcam monitoring software with LockDown Browser, you must also install this separately and follow its installation process as detailed in a separate document. When beginning your test with Monitor enabled, agreeing to its terms of use before beginning setup will prompt you to enter your WSUid and password for testing purposes before entering your WSUid and password for WSUid verification before you can commence it.
Quick Start Guide
Download is fast and simple and only needs to be completed once per device. Our Quick Start Guide includes system requirements as well as a short video that teaches students through the process.
When students are ready to take an exam, they simply click the LockDown Browser icon (a blue diamond with a gold padlock) and log into their institution’s learning management system – then proceed directly to taking their exam just like with any web browser.
Some instructors require their students to use LockDown Browser with webcam for exams. When this occurs, your instructor will provide you with a unique download link from within their online test environment and these steps will walk you through how to download, install, and prepare for taking it. Your instructor may even give a practice exam which requires using this software before taking their official exam.
Installation Requirements
Respondus Lockdown Browser software must be installed on the computer used by students taking an Examlockdown-enabled quiz. Launch a standard browser, navigate to your course, and then choose to “Launch LockDown Browser” button on quiz summary page. Depending on your system, this may require students to log in using their internet ID and password before selecting this feature. After clicking “download,” a download page will open and prompt students to select either a Windows installer or Mac installer, after which it can be run directly from their desktop (PC) or Applications folder (Mac). As part of installation, a pop-up may appear asking the student to close programs running in the background such as instant messaging programs and screen capture tools, including instant messenger services such as AIM. After completion of installation, a practice quiz can be taken to ensure that Respondus Lockdown Browser software functions effectively.
Once a student launches LockDown Browser, they won’t be able to access other applications or websites while taking an exam. Furthermore, this software prevents students from printing or copying questions and keeps a video recording of their environment to detect cheating during examination.
Additionally, the browser blocks email and instant messaging services, right mouse clicks and function keystrokes as well as documents and notes from being access. Furthermore, time limits on exams must be observed with all questions being completed before submission for grading.
Respondus Monitor software was intended to prevent cheating, yet students have found ways around it. When using Respondus Monitor, instructors must understand its limitations when using it and ensure students understand these restrictions prior to administering exams that require Respondus Monitor. If an instructor suspects a particular student may be trying to bypass its restrictions, Honorlock or Proctorio offer remote proctoring tools similar to Respondus Monitor that are also free trials from their learning management systems.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with the Lockdown Browser, first ensure your computer meets its System Requirements for PC or Mac computers. After restarting and following these Troubleshooting steps above, if problems still persist contact a Support Representative immediately.
Some programs running on your computer could cause the browser to lock up or stop responding, such as iTunes and media managers, file sharing agents like Bittorent, and instant messenger applications. To prevent this from happening while taking an exam, it’s advisable to close these before beginning. You may also experience losing internet connectivity – in this instance, shut down and hard reboot the computer (remove all power cables/batteries from laptop) then move as close to the router as possible before continuing your test.
Students taking exams online should opt for an Ethernet (wired) Internet connection instead of Wi-Fi or mobile hotspot due to its greater stability during an exam session. Wi-Fi networks tend to fluctuate, leading to drops or unstable signals during assessments; students taking tests using laptops must avoid USB modems or laptop connect cards that could interfere with wireless signals; mobile phone data connections could cause issues that result in lost connections during assessments.
Another recurrent browser problem occurs when it fails to shut down properly, likely as a result of programs running in the background. To ensure optimal browser operation on older machines without automatic updates enabled, close all unnecessary programs before trying to launch the browser.
Blank screens during assessments usually indicate that your browser has lost connection with your institution’s server. In such an instance, it’s wise to perform a hard reboot and move closer to your router; both techniques should help restore connectivity. Furthermore, make sure that you are using the appropriate Respondus license and that it has been activated within Canvas (you can check by clicking on its ID number located at the end of its code).
