How to Install Respondus Monitor and LockDown Browser on a Chromebook
Students must install LockDown Browser or Respondus Monitor software on their devices in order to participate in Canvas assessments (quizzes and examinations) that use these tools to prevent cheating. The process is quick and easy, requiring only a few seconds per device.

Students taking exams that require Respondus LockDown Browser (RLDB) with Monitor (webcam recording) should ensure the system requirements for this software are in place before beginning your test to avoid issues related to hardware and software limitations or compatibility. RLDB is available on Windows, macOS and now Chromebook (beta). The application runs in the background without impacting other programs or running exams through it; any extra monitors or keyboards should also be unplugged before running RLDB. Also make sure any antivirus or malware protection software has been disabled beforehand.
Installed, RLDB allows for the customization of Windows desktop, keyboard keystrokes and areas of Chrome browser to your own needs while providing access to only specific extensions and websites – ideal for kiosk and digital signage systems, or running custom web applications on PCs.
If you need to take an exam that requires LockDown Browser with Monitor on an iPad, instructor approval and the LockDown Browser Apple app will be needed. To download Respondus LockDown Browser (Chromebook), visit Blackboard’s Student Resources tab and click on ‘Respondus LockDown Browser (Chromebook)’ link. Follow the onscreen prompts to install and configure it correctly for use during exams. Using Chromebook? Installation Instructions
Users of Chromebooks may now access instructions for installing the Lockdown Browser, allowing them to take tests and quizzes offered by Canvas and Blackboard. Students should use the extension installation link provided in their course to complete a quiz that requires Lockdown Browser once they have deleted their cookies.
Students will notice a link to download and install the Chromebook extension before taking their quiz if a teacher has enabled it. On their device, clicking this link launches a new tab or window with instructions for carrying out that specific action.
After installation, users can open Lockdown Browser by tapping its icon in the Chrome app launcher that will display on their device. They will then be invited to close any programs the software has disabled, such as instant messaging, and enter their exam password if relevant. Browsers have been known to stall or lock up during exam sessions when using apps like instant messengers, media managers like iTunes and Bittorrent, media players, and related software. Since wifi and USB modem connections frequently offer erratic connections that interfere with secure test environments, students should strive to avoid using them during exams.
Students should install Lockdown Browser by visiting the HuskyCT Institution website and following the steps related to their OS once they have confirmed that their machine satisfies all prerequisites for installing software. They should be aware that this extension only works with the standard version of Google Chrome; it is incompatible with the S or SE editions.
Students should log into HuskyCT after setting up their browsers and proceed directly to any test that calls for the installation of Lockdown software. To download and install the program, students should click the “Download Respondus Lockdown Browser” link. After the software has finished downloading and installing, a pop-up window will ask if they want to add Respondus Lockdown Browser to Chrome. Simply select Add To Chrome in this box to add Respondus Lockdown Browser. When asked if they want Screencastify to automatically close before entering Canvas for their quiz or test.
