Lockdown Browser Download Canvas
Lockdown Browser is software that blocks students from printing, copying, going to another URL or accessing other applications during an online exam in Canvas. Students should download and install this program prior to taking an exam in this platform.
Instructors can access test-taking data for their class through Respondus Monitor dashboard. By clicking on an exam name, an arrow will open displaying class results.
What is LockDown Browser?
LockDown Browser is a custom browser designed to secure testing environments within learning management systems (Canvas in this case). It protects students from printing, copying, accessing unauthorised URLs, or installing applications while taking an assessment test. Furthermore, this browser makes cheating harder by disabling standard browser functions like minimizing test and pressing Print Screen buttons – LockDown Browser is typically employed when proctored examinations need to take place within your classroom environment.
Before students can access their assessments, instructors must configure them with LockDown Browser. When students navigate to an assessment page, a link is presented that allows them to download the browser directly from DU – this link won’t work with another source! Students can download LockDown Browser on both PC and Mac computers.
Once they click the LockDown Browser link, they are prompted to download and install LockDown Browser software on their computer. Once this process is complete, they can return to Canvas and navigate directly to an assessment that requires it – at which point it will open in full screen browser without being minimized or closed until submitted for grading.
LockDown Browser not only locks down browsers but can also be configured to record student behavior during assessments and flag suspicious activities for review by instructors. More information regarding this feature can be found on Respondus website.
Communication between instructors and their students regarding LockDown Browser exams or quizzes is critical. Instructors can do this by posting instructions on Canvas course sites, creating practice quizzes to test out LockDown Browser prior to taking an assessment, or bringing paper copies with them just in case any technical difficulties prevent students from finishing their assessments – especially important if the class uses fully online formats.
How do I download it?
Respondus Lockdown Browser helps instructors prevent cheating during online assessments in Canvas. Students using this custom browser cannot print, copy, access other applications or visit another URL during an assessment; additionally, this browser records student webcam activity so instructors can detect suspicious activity during exams. To gain further insight into how this technology works, view this Getting Started with Respondus Monitor Video or this PDF Guide.
Students can download and install Lockdown Browser ahead of any quiz assessment or exam in CarmenCanvas. In Course Navigation, students can click “Lockdown Browser Dashboard” link to launch and start it; if a quiz requires its use, its name will appear next to it in Course Navigation; for New Quizzes specifically, students will be informed after clicking Take the Quiz link that Lockdown Browser will be required before being given the option to take it.
Once students have downloaded and installed the browser, they can launch it from their desktop computer. When opening it for use, the application will alert students if any other programs need to be closed before taking an exam; they can either allow it to close them automatically or cancel out of this prompt and do it themselves.
After taking and passing a quiz, students can leave the browser and return to their normal computing environment. When exiting, however, students must provide a reason for leaving to facilitate data collection and evaluation of responses.
Instructors requiring their students to use Lockdown Browser during online assessments can activate the feature by clicking the arrow next to a Quiz and selecting Settings. From there, instructors can set their requirements – Require Respondus Lockdown Browser as well as whether to Require webcam use (both will appear as options in Settings menu) – these settings apply both New Quizzes as well as Classic ones; should any student experience difficulties taking an exam due to Respondus Lockdown requirements they can submit a help desk ticket and request additional support –
How do I install it?
Respondus Lockdown Browser must be installed before taking online quizzes and exams that require it, to prevent cheating during an assessment. Students won’t be able to print, copy or switch apps while taking an exam; making it very hard for students to cheat during online assessments in Canvas. To install Respondus Lockdown Browser follow these steps.
Once downloaded, our installation process is easy and straightforward. Follow the prompts to install our software onto your computer. After it has been installed, navigate directly to your course and begin taking an exam if required. If prompted to close certain applications, simply click “kill these programs” so our software will take care of this automatically for you. Once assessed and graded, feedback will be given with access to use our green “Need More Help?” button within browser for further assistance from Respondus representatives.
Students can access live online support from Respondus via its dedicated team via its website here; the site features knowledge bases and FAQs in addition to useful links. Moreover, students may access additional documentation of Respondus Monitor and Lockdown Browser via their course site and instructors who frequently offer “Flexible Testing” webinars can offer further help on using them effectively.
Respondus Lockdown Browser stands out from other LTI integrations by being an independent software application not offered as an extension within Canvas. As such, its installation process differs for Chromebook users: To do so, navigate to your course’s quiz or test page in Canvas and click the link for the Respondus Lockdown Browser test that requires it before following instructions for installing through Chrome’s web store. How do I use it?
Lockdown Browser requires students to first download and install its software before being used for exams that require it. After installation is complete, they can access their Canvas course site and click a link that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser in order to take part. Each quiz that needs Lockdown Browser will display a message at the top of its page indicating this requirement as well as providing them with a customized Yale download link that leads them to an introduction video or quiz itself.
Once a student presses the ‘Continue to Quiz’ button, they are taken directly to Respondus LockDown Browser login page. If they haven’t logged into this website with their Andrew ID and password yet, they will need to do so before being directed through to close any non-essential programs prior to opening Lockdown Browser for Windows or LockDown Browser for Mac (depending on which is being used).
Once a student has opened the correct application, they can click on ‘Start Quiz’ to take their exam. This application will prevent printing, copying or going to another page during their test and also prevent outside tools such as highlighters, calculators or websites from being used during it.
Instructors may set a time limit and/or maximum number of attempts on each quiz taken by students, which they then submit once completed answering all of the assessment’s questions. They then exit Respondus and return to their regular browser setup – while instructors can provide students with links for easy accessing this application through Canvas (SMU’s learning management system) LTI integration for easy use of Respondus.
