It would also be prudent for instructors to bring paper copies in case any software issues arise during administration of an exam.
Installation
Respondus Lockdown Browser, developed specifically to prevent cheating during exams, works on personal computers and tablets, as well as with many Learning Management Systems systems. To install it properly before taking an online education exam. It is strongly advised that this browser be installed before commencing testing.
Clicking the link will take you to a page titled “install now” where the installation process can begin. After clicking install now, a file installer file will be downloaded automatically into your Downloads folder by default and once it has finished downloading double-click it to launch the program and follow its instructions for complete setup.
Once installed, Lockdown Browser will launch automatically when clicking quizzes in Brightspace that require it. However, please be aware that it should not replace your regular browser; rather it should only be used during proctored tests on campus or classroom settings.

In addition, testing out software and taking practice quizzes prior to sitting the real test may help prepare you. License agreement

LockDown Browser is available to SMU students through an LTI integration with Canvas, their course management system. LockDown Browser is an efficient solution that ensures exam integrity and prevents cheating by permitting students to take tests from any location with any device while faculty can quickly verify student identity without leaving Canvas.

Unless otherwise indicated, this software belongs to Respondus and/or its licensors and is protected by federal and international copyright and intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell or transfer any rights in it without written permission from Respondus/its licensor. Furthermore, any attempt to bypass its locked browser environment or subvert its purpose are forbidden by using this software in any form whatsoever.
This Agreement grants a non-transferrable, non-sublicensable license which does not grant you any right to use Respondus’ trade names, trademarks, service marks or logos in any way. Furthermore, you agree to adhere to all domestic and international export regulations applicable to this software.
Requirements
LockDown Browser is a special web browser designed to combat cheating in Canvas testing environments. By blocking access to other programs and websites during an exam session, students cannot copy or print questions and navigate away from them without assistance from their instructor. When installing it on a laptop or desktop computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux with webcam capability and reliable Internet connection – and arriving for your exam with fully charged batteries in mind since many classrooms only have limited electric outlets – cheating becomes significantly reduced.
Respondus Lockdown Browser differs from regular web browsers in that it doesn’t contain a toolbar or menu options, preventing students from browsing other websites or apps during an online assessment session. Instead, students can use their webcam and record responses directly into it via Respondus Monitor software that syncs up with each student’s camera to capture images and recordings – these recordings will then be made available to teachers for review following assessment session completion.
