Lockdown Browser Conestoga
Lockdown Browser, a special proctoring software designed to prevent cheating in online exams, must be installed on student devices in order for exams to proceed without risk of cheating. It limits desktop features, web search and apps – anything which might lead to academic dishonesty during an exam – for optimal examination results.
Please follow these instructions for an effective use of this tool, but note that this does not replace live proctoring services.
Quizzes
Lockdown Browser-required quizzes must only be accessed using this browser, rather than D2L Brightspace’s regular web browser, to avoid being locked out or being unable to complete tasks on time due to timeouts or memory limitations in their computer – this means students cannot use other applications while taking such tests.
D2L’s Quizzes tab in Manage Quizzes page presents a listing of all quizzes alphabetically by title, as well as whether or not each quiz requires Respondus LockDown Browser. To make Lockdown Browser mandatory for an exam, select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam in the drop down menu.
Students cannot exit their browser until the quiz has been submitted for grading and they must give an explanation if they leave early (such as Internet connectivity issues or an emergency). Instructors may add password protection for an exam so students must enter a password code in order to start taking it.
LockDown Browser’s most useful feature is the inclusion of links to spreadsheet tools in their question wording, allowing instructors to link students directly to an Excel-like application in Lockdown Browser where they can enter answers for the quiz. The spreadsheet may already have content preloaded onto it or can remain blank and allow students to type their responses directly onto it.
If a quiz requires Lockdown Browser for viewing feedback and results, instructors can enable their students to review it on another device (such as their smartphone) so as to prevent students from copy-pasting or printing exam answers when reviewing them.
Assessments
Based on the assessment type and proctoring requirements, faculty may require their students to use an app or software for remote proctoring.
