Lockdown Browser Canvas Download
Some instructors utilizing Canvas courses employ Respondus LockDown Browser for administering graded quizzes in graded exams. This specialized browser keeps students from accessing other websites or apps while they take the exam.
Students access these quizzes via a special link unique to each university that includes information regarding LockDown Browser requirements.
Downloading the Application
Respondus Lockdown Browser will require students taking quizzes enabled with Respondus Lockdown Browser to download an application ahead of time, then once installed they will be able to take the assessment using a locked down browser that prevents printing, copying or going to another URL during assessment time – in addition to blocking out applications like screen capture or instant messaging.
This app is now available on Windows, Mac and Chromebook (beta). When students click the install link they are prompted to close any other programs currently open before continuing with installation. If all other programs do not close themselves automatically then an alert will appear alerting the user they need to manually close them themselves before continuing.
Once installed, students can launch the LockDown Browser application by clicking its desktop or Mac Finder icon and will be prompted to log in using their internet ID and password before being shown their course list with quiz options they need to take and seeing an option called “Launch LockDown Browser” appear on its quiz summary page; for Canvas Classic and Blackboard Learn quizzes they can double-click their LockDown Browser app within their Applications folder to do the same thing.
Some instructors utilize Respondus Lockdown Browser by setting up a short, non-graded quiz for students to practice with the software and familiarize themselves with taking exams in different environments before taking their graded examination with full confidence of having achieved excellent results.
To ensure students have an optimal experience with Respondus, we advise them to utilize one of the latest versions. Chromium-based versions provide more control over test environments than older ones do. Installing the Application
After downloading and installing Lockdown Browser, students can open it and follow its instructions to launch it. Lockdown Browser prevents students from printing, copying, visiting other URLs or accessing other applications during an assessment test in Canvas; if your instructor requires that you use this browser for their assessment test in Canvas, that means they cannot take their exam using their regular web browser alone.
This software is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, but will only operate when installed on one. When running, it will notify you if any programs are currently running and prompt you to close them if needed before continuing the test. This helps ensure no other program can access or capture input during your examination of it. It may be wise to perform a test run with your browser prior to performing it for real on an actual device so you know exactly what to expect during an examination session.
When taking a quiz that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, your instructor will provide a link for downloading it within the quiz settings. When installing it correctly, follow all directions carefully in order to complete installation successfully and access your quiz afterward.
Respondus Lockdown Browser is a custom browser designed to secure testing environments by restricting students from switching between websites or applications during an examination. Respondus Monitor adds extra quiz security with remote video proctoring – both features can be enabled for Canvas New Quizzes as well as Classic Quizzes.
Students can utilize an in-browser support button from within their browser to request assistance with any problems they experience while taking an exam. Instructors can enable a live chat feature so students can pose any queries they might have while undergoing exams; it is currently only available with graded assessments that use Respondus Lockdown Browser but could potentially be made available for all quizzes in future; students will simply need to log into Canvas account in order to access this option.
Taking the Real Exam
If your instructor assigns an online quiz that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, download and install this software before taking the exam. Doing so allows for easier assessment; Respondus Lockdown Browser prevents printing, copying, going to another URL or accessing other applications during assessments. Your instructor may also activate Respondus Monitor so they can record you during this assessment process to detect cheating attempts.
After installinging the application, close all other programs (other than your regular browser) and launch the Lockdown Browser. When asked by it to close other programs automatically for you, press “Yes.” When this has completed, navigate directly to Canvas @ Yale login page; once there, navigate directly to quiz that requires Respondus Lockdown – this should display exactly as expected on a standard browser.
Once you access a quiz, a window will pop-up asking if you would like to connect to Respondus servers in order to verify that it is you using their account. From here, a series of questions will appear that Respondus records and saves for later review.
Respondus programs also come equipped with an inbuilt chat service for students taking quizzes. Just click on the green “Need More Help?” button in your browser to connect with one of Respondus representatives and have any of your queries addressed immediately.
While this feature may seem beneficial, it intrudes on student privacy by taking control of his or her webcam and microphone and watching what goes on both on the device itself and nearby. With this data in hand, it can determine whether cheating has taken place and identify potential suspects accordingly.
While this method can effectively prevent cheating, it can still be overcome by students with enough intelligence to work around it. Other proctoring programs with similar features but that do not rely on screens, cameras, microphones to verify whether students are actually taking the tests such as Honorlock and Proctorio which are both Chrome extensions.
Video Review
Instructors often require video reviews of exams taken by certain students, which means instructing them to use Respondus Lockdown Browser with web camera enabled while taking their quiz; when they click “Submit Answers,” this web camera will turn off.
Respondus browser enables instructors to manage students’ testing environments by restricting them from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during assessments. Respondus Monitor serves as an online proctoring solution integrated with Lockdown Browser; for real-time proctoring synchronously online. In order to use video review features during exams, instructors must enable it via Quiz Settings.
If a student’s instructor has enabled video review, they will see an “Take a Proctored Exam” link in their Canvas quizzes list that takes them directly to Respondus where they can follow instructions for submitting video reviews of assessments.
Respondus sends instructors an automated email with the results of video reviews submitted, which allows them to review them and make any necessary modifications to their grade. If results of video reviews are unsatisfactory, instructors may reach out directly to students via email or in-person in order to discuss any problems that have come up during review.
Lockdown Browser’s settings go beyond standard browser features to provide instructors with additional customization opportunities. Instructors can select an Allow Access to Specific External Web Domains (L) setting which enables students to access specific domains during a test; furthermore, instructors can enable Calculator on Toolbar (M) and Printing from Toolbar (N) features so as to provide calculator and printing functions within Lockdown Browser during assessment sessions.
Students can access Respondus Lockdown Browser by following either a custom Yale download link in their Canvas course or the UAB eLearning Respondus Browser and Monitor webpage. They should install it ahead of time, understanding that when taking an exam requiring Respondus Browser/Monitor they must open it through this specific Lockdown Browser rather than their regular browser.
