Jonathan Judaken was appointed as the Gloria M. Goldstein Professor of Jewish History & Thought on April 3. The event featured a greeting from Feng Sheng Hu, the Richard G. Engelsmann Dean of Arts & Sciences and the Lucille P. Markey Distinguished Professor; remarks by Erin McGlothlin, vice dean of undergraduate affairs and the Gloria M. Goldstein Professor of Holocaust Studies; along with the installation and medallion presentation by Provost Beverly Wendland.
In his address, titled “Antisemitism and Anti-Antisemitism,” Judaken reflected on how his Jewish upbringing in South Africa’s apartheid context influenced his career. Serving as the Chair of the Department of Jewish, Islamic, and Middle Eastern Studies in Arts & Sciences, Judaken is recognized for introducing the concept of “anti-antisemitism” into scholarly discussions. “Much of my research has focused on how individuals comprehend antisemitism, whether to oppose or counter it,” he stated. “It pertains to anti-antisemitism.”
Judaken stressed that the struggle against antisemitism ought not to be wielded as a political tool. “Nowadays, both antisemitism and anti-antisemitism are being exploited and weaponized,” he noted.
