Jeremy Goldbach, a widely esteemed expert on LGBTQ+ mental wellness and the first Masters & Johnson Distinguished Professor in Sexual Health and Education at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2025, due to cancer. He was 42 years old.

Goldbach additionally held the position of associate dean for faculty affairs at the Brown School, where his absence is profoundly felt throughout the community.

“The Brown School has experienced the loss of one of its foundational figures,” stated Dorian Traube, the Neidorff Family and Centene Corporation Dean of the Brown School. “Jeremy was a mentor, researcher, administrative figure, and an exceptionally humorous, genuine companion.”

For over 15 years, Goldbach committed his professional life to research and instruction aimed at diminishing stigma and enhancing the welfare of LGBTQ+ youth and adolescents. His efforts garnered backing from numerous organizations, including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense, and various foundations.

In 2010, he co-established Proud & Empowered, a program intended to support LGBTQ+ youngsters and foster improved school environments.

In 2022, he was appointed as the school’s first Masters & Johnson Distinguished Professor in Sexual Health and Education, a role honoring trailblazing sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, who conducted much of their research at WashU. At the Brown School, Goldbach also led the Sexuality, Health and Gender Center.
