In the iconic Heritage Museum at Dodd Hall, amidst family, associates, and university officials, veteran Florida State University police officer Jason Trumbower was officially sworn in on Tuesday as the newly appointed chief of police.
Trumbower, a 26-year veteran of the FSU Police Department, assumed the role of chief in April. He had previously served as interim chief since January and as interim deputy chief for the preceding 11 months. In 1998, he graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s degree in criminology and participated in football under Coach Bobby Bowden during 1994 and 1995.
The event garnered substantial community support, featuring local law enforcement, representatives from the Tallahassee Fire Department, Mayor John Dailey, and Leon County Superintendent of Schools Rocky Hanna.
FSU President Richard McCullough commenced the ceremony by greeting attendees and expressing thoughts about Trumbower’s appointment.
“I wish to extend my appreciation to Chief Jason Trumbower for embracing this position,” McCullough stated. “He possesses the insight, the experience, and the esteem of the entire department and law enforcement circles.”
Trumbower took on his leadership role just days ahead of one of the university’s most challenging episodes.
“On April 17, our campus confronted a calamity that unsettled us all,” McCullough remarked. “In that moment, Jason exhibited composure and bravery. His officers reacted rapidly and professionally. They safeguarded our campus. They preserved lives. And they contributed to restoring a sense of security at a time we urgently required it.”
McCullough went on to mention that what resonated with many following the incident was Trumbower’s empathy. He reached out to those impacted, supported his officers, and assisted the campus in initiating the healing process.
“That is the essence of leadership. And that is why he has my complete trust,” McCullough concluded.
