Jason He, a specialist in wastewater management and environmental biotechnology, has been appointed as the Laura and William Jens Professor of Environmental Engineering.

Since 2020, he has been part of the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, where he initiated the Environmental Biotechnology and Bioenergy Lab.

His investigations concentrate on creating sophisticated technologies to reclaim resources from wastewater. Unlike the common perception of wastewater as something to be discarded, He regards it as a reservoir of precious materials when processed correctly with advanced biotechnologies. For instance, the electrochemical instruments developed in He’s laboratory can extract and retrieve phosphorus, which is a highly valued fertilizer.

“Jason He’s creative endeavors in wastewater management and environmental biotechnology exemplify his remarkable contributions to the discipline,” remarked Aaron F. Bobick, dean of the McKelvey School of Engineering and the James M. McKelvey Professor. “His elevation to the position of Laura and William Jens Professor of Environmental Engineering is a testament to his pioneering research and dedication to fostering sustainable solutions for the future. We are delighted to welcome such an imaginative leader and committed educator to our faculty.”
