A recent investigation, carried out by  Laurena Bernabo, an assistant professor at Grady College within the Department of Entertainment and Media Studies, showcases the viewpoints of dubbing professionals regarding the evolving function of artificial intelligence (AI) in the dubbing sector.

In Bernabo’s article, “How, When, and Why to Use AI: Strategic Uses of Professional Perceptions and Industry Lore in the Dubbing Industry,” she examines the transitions in dubbing from human-focused methods to the integration of neural machine translations and artificial intelligence.

Dubbing refers to the process of substituting the original dialogue in a movie, television episode, or video with a recorded audio track to modify the language of the content. Initially, producers need to create a script for the original material in the target language. Subsequently, voice actors and sound engineers collaborate to synchronize lip movements, emotions, and tones of the original characters.
