The classic saying, “Discover a profession you love, and you will never have to toil a day in your existence,” serves as a true reflection of Clint Udell’s existence and career.

As an educator and facilities manager at the UGA Golf Course, Udell directs the day-to-day operations of the driving range while aiding in the retention and expansion of the player community.

“Golf is an immensely satisfying pastime because you can’t merely stumble into good hits and favorable results,” Udell remarked. “It demands perseverance and practice. To be a constructive influence, a supportive mentor — it’s simply wonderful.”

Udell’s passion for golf ignited when he was young, as his father presented him with the sport at the age of 10. For numerous years, he regarded it merely as a leisure pursuit. However, as he progressed through college, his perspective began to shift.

Udell spent two years at Florida State University before transitioning to Augusta State University (now Augusta University) on a part-time basis. During that period, he identified two paths: continue chasing a conventional college degree or fully dedicate himself to a profession in golf.

He opted for the latter, enrolling in the Professional Golfers’ Association Professional Golf Management Program. This self-directed track emphasizes facility administration, teaching, and club fitting. After three years of rigorous work and study, he achieved full PGA membership in 2005.

“I didn’t expect that my entire adult working journey would revolve around a golf course, but I recognized my love for being in that environment,” Udell shared. “I aspire to instill that same enthusiasm in others about their pursuits.”

Prior to his arrival at UGA, Udell served at two private establishments, acquiring various insights into golf course administration. Through his PGA connections, he discovered an opening at UGA, and in 2012, he became part of the university.

“Initially, working at the university was daunting due to its vastness, but I soon realized it consisted of numerous small groups filled with remarkable individuals,” he expressed.

Udell’s responsibilities encompass managing a team of 20 to 30 student employees alongside his peers, overseeing inventory and general supplies, aiding in facility maintenance, and collaborating with the UGA Golf Team and other university divisions on events and operations.

However, perhaps his most cherished aspect of the role — aside from enjoying the stunning views from the E.B. Smith Clubhouse — is making certain that the driving range is inviting and accessible to students, staff, faculty, and the wider Athens community. The facilities offer an outlet for many individuals who might not otherwise have a designated home course.

“I assist individuals in improving their skills, and that instills hope. When you’re hopeful, you usually exhibit a better attitude and are receptive to development,” Udell explained. “It’s an incredible chance to spread the goodwill of the game, and hopefully, it facilitates enjoyment for others.”

Udell’s role wouldn’t be fulfilled without the valuable contribution of his team, consisting of five full-time staff members. They collaborate to ensure operations flow seamlessly, particularly in coordination with UGA Athletics and other university affiliates.

“This position has enabled me to connect with countless remarkable individuals,” Udell remarked. “The relationships, mentorships, and teamwork — it’s what renders this place extraordinary.”
