Furthermore, the Department of Political Science at WashU secured the No. 2 position in North America for faculty research output over the past five years. This category assesses the mean number of academic articles published in prestigious journals for each faculty member in the department. The department also attained the No. 10 rank for recent research influence, which is based on the significance of the journals where research papers are published.

The study cites that the analysis is grounded on a comprehensive review of 115,427 articles and 12,696 books authored by 5,586 faculty across 178 departments spanning North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Oceania, and Africa.

The authors remarked that the research “offers one of the initial sets of objective rankings for departments, both within and outside of the United States, to assess their research accomplishment in relation to others.”
