Anthropic reports on a user of Claude:

Recently, we thwarted a complex cybercriminal who employed Claude Code to execute extensive theft and extortion of personal information. The perpetrator targeted no fewer than 17 diverse organizations, encompassing healthcare, emergency services, along with governmental and religious entities. Instead of encrypting the pilfered data with conventional ransomware, the perpetrator threatened to publicly unveil the information in a bid to coerce victims into paying ransoms that occasionally surpassed $500,000.

The perpetrator utilized AI to what we perceive as an unparalleled extent. Claude Code was harnessed to automate reconnaissance, gather victims’ credentials, and infiltrate networks. Claude was permitted to make both tactical and strategic choices, such as determining which information to exfiltrate, and how to devise psychologically tailored extortion demands. Claude assessed the exfiltrated financial data to ascertain suitable ransom figures, and produced visually alarming ransom notices displayed on victims’ devices.

This is alarming. It represents a notable advancement compared to what was achievable even a few years back.

Peruse the complete Anthropic essay. They uncovered North Koreans utilizing Claude to perpetrate remote-worker fraud, alongside a cybercriminal employing Claude “to create, promote, and disseminate various ransomware variants, each endowed with advanced evasion features, encryption, and anti-recovery systems.”
